Analysis and Design of Flanged-Beams

Assignment #5

Individual Assignment

Analysis and Design of Doubly Reinforced Rectangular Beams and Singly Reinforced
Flanged Beams

Chapter 5

The floor plan shown is part of the cast-in-place (CIP) building, where the floor beams and slabs
are cast monolithic. Concrete compressive strength is 𝑓 40 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and reinforcing steel yield
strength is 𝑓 420 𝑀𝑃𝑎. All beams have the same overall depth of h = 600 mm and web width
𝑏 300 𝑚𝑚. All beams are reinforced with tension steel 𝐴 1136 𝑚𝑚 at the location of
maximum positive moment (near midspan). At the location of maximum negative moment (at
the support), all beams are reinforced with tension steel 𝐴 1136 𝑚𝑚 and compression
steel 𝐴 568 𝑚𝑚 . Assume suitable stirrup diameter and use concrete cover = 40 mm. Floor
slab thickness is 150 mm. Assume that supporting columns are 500 x 500 mm.

Q1. Select suitable reinforcing steel bar diameter (number) to satisfy the minimum spacing
requirements for tension steel based on ACI318 and calculate the flexural design capacity ∅𝑀
of the L-shaped (in cross-section) beam B1-C1, at the location of maximum positive moment.
Show detailed calculations such as effective flange width 𝑏 , strength reduction factor, minimum
area of tensile steel check, leading to the calculated flexural design capacity. Draw a clear cross-
section showing section dimensions, cover, stirrup diameters and reinforcing steel bars. Ignore
the presence of reinforcing steel on the compression side.

Q2. Select suitable reinforcing steel bar diameter (number) to satisfy the minimum spacing
requirements for tension steel based on ACI318 and calculate the flexural design capacity ∅𝑀
of the T-shaped (in cross-section) beam B3-C3, at the location of maximum positive moment.

Q3. Select suitable reinforcing steel bar diameter (number) to satisfy the minimum spacing
requirements for tension steel based on ACI318 and calculate the flexural design capacity ∅𝑀
