7. INTRODUCTION
First, the temperature range is generated using 2 dry blocks: Fluke 9170 (-45 to 140) °C and Fluke 9173 (50 to
700) °C and the temperature is determined using a SPRT Fluke 5626 (-200 to 660) °C. SPRT measurements are
made in 4-wire resistance using an 8-1/2 digit Transmille 8081 digital multimeter.
Based on the SPRT calibration, the following IT90 sub-ranges are taken [1].
Range (°C) Deviation function
-198.3442 a 0.01 W −W r =a 4 ( W −1 ) +b 4 ( W −1 ) ln W
0 a 660.323 W −W r =a7 ( W −1 )+ b7 (W −1 )2 +c 7 ( W −1 )3

The inverse polynomials of the IT90 are given by:

The uncertainty estimate is based primarily on document [2]. The components that will be taken into account
are:
 Uncertainty due to oxidation.
 Uncertainty for short and long-term stability.
 Repeatability of readings.
 Uncertainty of DMM 8081 in resistance measurement.
 Inconsistency between sub-ranges due to lack of univocity type 1.
 Non-univocity type 3.
 SPRT calibration.
 Gradients and block stability.
 Immersion

Oxidation uncertainty.
According to 6.1 of [2] the oxidation effects of the SPRT for general measurements can be up to 5 mK using a
single Rtpa value. In our case, although we performed 600 °C heating to remove oxidation and restore the
thermometer, we would take a value equal to twice 10 mK, associated with a rectangular distribution:
10 mK
uox =
√3
Uncertainty of stability
These data are taken from the manufacturer [3] and verified in the calibrations. For short and long term, we
have respectively:
3 mK 30 mK
u ST = u ¿=
√3 √ 12
It is worth mentioning that the long-term component contains the effects of the drift of the resistance of the
triple point of water (Rpta).

Repeatability of readings.
For the repeatability of the readings, due to the quantity (5), the range of the readings is taken and
converted to variability using the range distribution function.

It is worth mentioning that this estimate is in units of resistance, so the following factor is required to convert
it to temperature.
1 dT
F ( T ) [ K Ω −1 ] = (T )
R pta d W r
As shown in the previous equation, the derivative depends on the temperature. To estimate it, a least
squares fit was made to a polynomial of order 2 to the values in column 7 of the table in appendix B of [2], as
shown in the following figure, which shows the goodness of fit using the coefficient R 2.

The declared CMC is taken for this component since the dispersion of the resistance values was considered in
the previous point. It is worth mentioning that said CMC contains all the effects inherent in DMM.

Inconsistency between sub-ranges due to lack of type 1 univocity.

To simplify the problem if we look at Figures 7.1 and 7.2 of [2], we can conclude for the different intervals:
Range (°C) Uncertainty u SRI
-250 a 0.01 < 0.3 mK
0 a 420 < 0.5 mK

So, this component will be overestimated for comfort. It should be mentioned that there is no multiplicity
above 420 ° C.

Type 3 univocity.
In the same way as for the previous component, observing Figures 7.4 and 7.5 of [2], the component is
overestimated for simplicity, leaving:
Range (°C) Uncertainty u NU
-250 a 0.01 < 0.2 mK
0 a 660 < 0.5 mK

SPRT calibration.
In this case, the procedure described in [2] is performed.
N
SPRT
ucal = √∑ (
i=1
ui × f i ( T ) )
2

In [2] the functions of weight are in function, worth the redundancy, of W r . For convenience we have
converted them here at temperature space resting:
N

∏ ( T −T calj )
j
f i ( T )= N
i≠ j
cal cal
∏j ( T i −T j )

The following graphs show the weighting functions for the 8 calibration points in the 2 sub-ranges.

Finally, the expanded uncertainties remain as shown in the following figures:

In order to establish a point CMC in each subrange, the highest value was taken:
SPRT
ucal = {12.59 mKmK T T≤ >00 ° C° C
Gradients and well stability.
In this case, the highest gradient uncertainty value reported in the calibration certificate is taken for each
block.

Immersion
Regarding immersion, it was considered [4]. Thus, the depth of the well is 203 mm, which for the diameter of
the SPRT 5626 (6.35 mm) means approximately 32 diameters. If such a ratio is placed on the graph in figure
1.2, the relative temperature error is 1 ppm. The following graph shows what this error represents in
temperature units (mK) in the temperature range of interest.

For convenience, the error is overestimated at 1 mK and is considered completely as uncertainty

contribution.
uinm =1 mK
Quadratically adding all the components described and multiplying by a coverage factor k = 2, the expanded
uncertainty is finally obtained.

It is worth mentioning that the dominant components for the calibration of a thermometer with a resolution
SPRT
of 1 mK are in decreasing order: u R, u grad, ucal , u¿ and uox . The rest of the components are negligible.

Finally, the CMC remains as.
