Issues and Solution
Motivation in a Business
Motivation is the desire or willingness to do something. What motivates a
person to do something could be a offer or something that gives them the
motivation to do it. When employees are motivated to do something within the
business it results in more productivity, less absence, better quality on the
products or services. In CTRL Cuztomz we do things to motivate our employees
such as having a spirit week, having a “FREAKTASTIC Fridays“ where we had
employee bonding which helped us work together better and that employees are
able to talk to different departments. It’s motivating because it is fun to be apart of
and the activities were very interactive. Ways we can incorporate it more into our
business is by having more employee bonding days and spirit weeks and business
parties on special occasions and by offering special rewards to employee who
show hardwork and determination constantly throughout the business.

Motivational Factors & Its Role in Virgin Media
As stated from Herzberg’s research in the 1950s, hygiene and motivator factors
are the two factors of employee satisfaction in a business place. However, hygiene on
its own does not lead to satisfaction. There must be rewards and recognition in a
workplace to motivate employees. This leads to not only employee satisfaction but
leads to improved individual performance as well as the overall company performance
as well. Virgin Media motivates employees by offering rewards such as bonus schemes
as well as additional benefits. Virgin Media also manages all technicians through “Your
Story Framework” that help with career progression. This involves meetings that
discuss performance, progress, and development of plans for the business. All of these
motivational factors that Virgin Media offers keep employees happy and able to live up
to their full potential. With all employees happy and working to the best of their ability
this improves the quality and performance of the company as a whole.
Motivational Factors & Its Role in CTRL Customz
CTRL Customz has a few motivational factors but there could definitely be
more. One way we motivate our employees to do their best is by recognition as
employee of the month which is displayed in our monthly newsletter. Another great
way we motivate employees to do their best is through employee evaluations.
Everyone in the company is evaluated based on their performance each month.
Employees are honest about how efficiently their peers work. Each employee
receives feedback on what they can improve and based on their feedback they
should make changes that benefit the not only themselves but the company as
well. At the start of the company we also included Fridays where employees were
able to socialize and get to know each other. This motivates our employees to
communicate and contribute more to conversations. As our company grows
hopefully we will be able to include more motivational factors such as bonuses and
more social events.
The positive effects of a motivated workforce
- The success of a company is based on the amount of work the employees put
in. This means that the workers have to be prioritized within the company and
motivated.
- When the employees of a company are motivated, this results in:
- Increased productivity
- Higher quality products/services
- Increased employee participation
- Lower staff turnover
The negative effects of a motivated workplace
- There are two types of motivation
- Intrinsic motivation: motivated for personal rewards, for the pleasure of completing the task
- Extrinsic motivation: motivated for a reward or to avoid punishment
- When too many rewards are given to the employees for performing tasks,
intrinsic motivation is decreased and they depend on extrinsic motivators only.

- When this occurs, creativity is decreased because the employees are focused
on simply finishing the task for the reward, rather than focusing on the quality
of work

- At CTRL customz, for example, we do game fridays periodically so it’s seen

as a reward that isn’t required or expected every time.
Reflection/What We Have Learned
Psychological needs are the main motivator of the workplace contributing to a
positive environment.

We need to plan events to help keep our employees work ethic up and to prevent
burnout.
