Dear Ms. Gray,

I’m writing to you because I have taken interest in Latham Center's job posting for Children's 1:1
Counselor. I believe I would be a perfect fit for the job.

I’m currently a second year at Colorado State University, pursuing a major in psychology with a
concentration in clinical counseling and a minor in creative writing. I hope to graduate and get
my Psy.D in Clinical mental health. I plan to become a child psychologist in the future, hence
why I would be a great fit. From my understanding you are looking for someone that can express
empathy for these kids and to be able to handle situations in a compassionate manner.

I have over 6 years of experience with kids. For all four years of my high school career, I babysat
for a neighborhood bible study group. Around eight to twelve kids and ranging from different
ages. This was an amazing experience for me which opened my eyes to what I wanted to do in
my future. Every week for three hours I would be put into a room with these kids to hang out. I
would have to plan crafts, type of game nights, or bible readings. Handling a handful of kids can
get very chaotic, especially when a two-year-old is screaming in my ear. Throughout the years I
have acquired the skills to properly discipline, making sure the kids understand why they are
upset and how to resolve the situation for everyone involved. No one ever got by without
apologizing.

Including being a babysitter I was also a lifeguard for three years, and one summer was a swim
instructor. Vastly different atmosphere compared to babysitting. Lifeguarding has taught me the
basic first aid tips to help when a child is in need or anyone in that matter. I’ve been CPR
certified, and first aid training certified for 4 years now. Lifeguarding has helped me learn how to
act responsibly and calmly in high stress situations. This I feel can be translated to being
sympathetic with the kids.

I hope you take my application into consideration. One thing I really miss is having the
connection with the kids. I would love to work at a center like yours. Not only will this be a
wonderful experience for me, but I believe I will be able to bring empathy for the kids every day
of the job and being able to handle situation with the kids
Sincerely,

Isabelle McGuire
