It is a shame that the word 'amateur' now has negative connotations. 'It’s the work of an amateur'” or 'This is an amateurish
effort' now means something that has been done badly.
The word originally had a very different meaning. It comes from the Latin word meaning 'to love.' An 'amateur' is really a
person who does something not to earn money or become famous, but because they love doing it.
It might seem strange to talk about 'amateurs' in the context of today’s business world, but the reality is different. Some chief
executive officers (CEOs) have certainly reached their positions because they love the pursuit of profit, or the political and
psychological games that running a company involves, but there are others who have reached their positions simply because
they love what their company or organisation does.
Many great business people and innovators have been amateurs. The world of film-making and the music industry spring to
mind. People like Samuel Goldwyn (founder of MGM or Harvey Weinstein (founder of Miramax) are certainly examples of
sharp businessmen, but also of people driven by a love of film. In the same way, in the UK, Alan McGee, Geoff Travis and the
late Tony Wilson all founded important and influential independent record labels (Creation, Rough Trade and Factory,
respectively), making bands like Oasis, The Smiths and New Order famous out of love for music, not profit. Recently, the
growth of the internet has shown how this phenomenon works. While the burst of the dot com bubble saw many people
hoping to make a quick million fall by the wayside, people like Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google and Mark Zuckerberg of
Facebook have become multi-millionaires. These people are 'nerds', people who love technology and computing, and may not
have great social skills, let alone business skills. These are people who would be setting up innovative websites even if they
made no money at all. To give another example, the recent growth of interest in organic food has seen some amateurs
become successful. Now, producers of traditional Sardinian goat’s cheese, English organic wine and pure Bavarian bratwurst
are becoming significant players in the food industry. They are selling their products directly to big supermarket chains, or
directly to the public via, again, the internet. Many of these people run 'cottage industries', working from home with a small
staff, or forming small co-operatives of local producers. They now have the power to reach a global market, without losing the
personal style of their work.
In their professional lives, many people have to choose between love and money – between doing a job they love that doesn’t
have great financial rewards, or doing a job that pays well but doesn’t satisfy the soul. Some people, however, are showing
that it is possible to do both.
Soon, perhaps, 'It’s the work of an amateur!' will again become a compliment, rather than an insult.
