ENGL101H Lesson Plan: Grammar, Punctuation, and MLA

Class Size

6 students

Lesson Duration

25 minutes

Assumptions

Students have been introduced to the course during a synchronous class session. They have also

attended one synchronous class session on writing basics, like TEA paragraphing, quote

integration, transition words, and effective writing. If students feel that they need to review

syntaxical terms prior to the lesson, they can review the Syntax Cheat Sheet.

Aims/Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to (SWBAT):

● Define “sentence fragment,” dangling modifier,” and “misplaced modifier”

● Describe the confusion that can result from unclear pronoun reference

● Differentiate between proper use of “who,” “whom,” “whose,” and “who’s”

● Explain how to use semicolons, colons, commas, and quotation marks in combination

with other punctuation marks

● Distinguish between properly formatted MLA citations and improperly formatted MLA

citations

● Integrate quotes in accordance with the MLA Style Guide

Applications

Students can check their papers and the papers of their peers for proper grammar, punctuation,

and MLA usage. Since students will be required to use MLA for all major assignments, they can
