Short Essay #4

The objective that I am going to focus on is “Obj.1.2.b Engage with cities and

unincorporated areas to reduce youth access to tobacco products.” This priority targets the youth

that has had frequent contact with tobacco products and its goal is to minimize the access that

they have had to them. This objective is very important because of the huge increase and spike

we have seen in youth consumption of tobacco products. I think the spike has been due to the

fact that they’re so easy to acquire and are popular amongst them so it’s expected to grow in such

form. The youth that is being affected by the consumption of these products are young teens that

have access to forms of tobacco that are usually not in form of a cigarette. These tobacco

products have been taking form of e-cigarettes, vapes, hookahs, etc. They’re given fruity flavors

that are appealing to the youth therefore helping to ease them into addiction of nicotine after

never having had one before.

The strategic planning process for this objective will have to be appealing as it is meant

for youth. I think that that the best way to approach would be to make it seem as something

comprisable rather than demanding to them because it may lose their attention. Although, if the

strategic planning was focused in form of a punishment such as a fine or other community

service if found with one of these products, it could also be seen as helpful and scare them into

not partaking anymore. It can be approached through two extremes or more so opposites but

whichever way it is that it is approached, in the process they should teach about the effects of the

tobacco and especially other forms as they are fairly new and have not been around long enough

to have much research for.
