SL.3.1c, SL.3.1d, SL.3.6, 3-5 ETS 1-1.

• Objective:
- SWBAT to identify recycled materials by locating recycled materials.

-SWBAT to collaborate with their teams to create a 3D wild animal with recycled
materials and shapes.

-SWBAT to create a 2D model of their chosen animal.

-SWBAT to discuss and write three important facts about their animal.

-SWBAT to create a Google Slide with their final projects and present it to the class.

• Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: at least 3 recycled items of students’

choice from the scavenger hunt, measuring tape or ruler, glue, tape, scissors , Google
Drawing and Google Slide.

• Suggested group size: 2-3

• Procedures:

Scavenger Hunt and 3D Model (Groups)

Students will gather with their partners or groups and open the Jamboard to do the
scavenger hunt. After students are finished with the scavenger hunt they will decide
which three items they want to utilize to build a 3D wild animal. The project must be
made with at least three of the recycled items; it should also include the three primary
shapes and a cylinder. The dimensions should be 6x6. Students will decide as a group
which wild animal they want to build. There can only be one of each animal (groups can
take turns rolling dice to decide which group can choose their animal first)
Google Drawing (Individually)
Once students are finished building their 3D wild animal, they will open a Google
Drawing tool and re-create their animals in 2D (yes we are doing the reverse method).
Students must place the animal in the middle of the table and they must sit at different
angles. Once they have opened a new drawing, they will need to set a background, this
should be the animals’ habitat and students must draw their animal from their
perspective. Students will work independently to create their 2D models. Students will
name and save their drawings.
Google Slides (Groups)
Students will come back to their groups and create a Google Slide to present to the
classroom. Students are required to research three important facts about their animal
and one important thing on how recycling can help their environment. Students will also
include both their 2D and 3D animals in their presentation. The first slide should include
the name, habitat and facts about the animal. The following slide will be their 2D
drawings(all of the groups’ drawings) . Each group will have a designated speaker to
present the animal and facts. When students are presenting their own drawing, they
must place the 3D model in the position from their perspective that they drew for their
2D model. Students then must explain the shapes they used to create their model.

Extension:
Students can create a GIF of their 2D image in the website Giphy.

Begin by going to the website and creating an account. Click on the “CREATE” blue
button at the top right corner.

Now before you begin uploading your images you must go back into your 2D drawing.
Start by downloading your wild animal and save it as a (.jpg) image. Then you will start
removing parts of your drawing ex. Head, body, legs and save the image each time as
you remove the entire animal and all you have left is the background (habitat). Make
sure you have at least four images to create your GIF. Head back to the website and
start selecting your images from your files. *TIP* you can number your files so when you
open them you know in what order to upload them.
Next, you can add a caption, this should be the name of your animal or your name and
then click the “CONTINUE TO EDIT” during this step you can be creative and choose
your font, color, animation, stickers and effects.

Once you are content with your Gif click “CONTINUE TO UPLOAD“ where your final
product will show, if you need to edit you can go back, if you are finished, click the
“UPLOAD GIPHY'' button. After you are finished it should give you the link to share with
your class and friends!

• Assessment: Students will be assessed based on their final presentation and 2D and
3D models as well as their ability to use and understand what recycled materials are.
Students will also be assessed on their ability to follow directions and utilize the tools
given to complete this activity including the software tools used to create the 2D
drawings and their skills to use technology appropriately. Additionally, Students will also
be assessed on participation, team work, creativity, communication, speaking and
listening skills. Grades will be given individually to all students who were actively
engaged and on task during the entire project.
