Ledger Job
The crew is invited one night to the elegantly-appointed
private quarters of their broker, a Vesper by the name
of Delilah Jonduer. Delilah is a beautiful woman in
the latter half of her middle years, and age has only
ripened her beauty. She manages a regal bearing as she
sits daintily eating dinner in front the crew, consuming
a steak that looks large enough to feed three people
and a mug of rough-looking ale. Despite a meal that is
incongruous with her refined exterior, when Delilah
speaks it is with a smooth and smoky voice that makes
her sound as though she is just rousing from a pleasant
night’s sleep.
She tells the crew that her eyes and ears have informed
her that a certain Senator, Benjamin Vargas, recently
let his mistress, Lady Felcourt, become aware that
he has been planning on emigrating from the city
to Elderland...and taking a number of valuable state
secrets with him. Lady Felcourt does not care about
the state secrets, but she does not want Senator Vargas
to leave her, so she plans to reveal the Senator’s plans,
using correspondences stolen from the Senator that
incriminate him in a plot to defect to the nations on the
far side of the sea.
Tell the Players...
Before starting, give the players a brief précis of the Job
so they can decide on the characters they want to create:
“This Job involves stealing a document containing
blackmail from a corrupt noble.”
The Basics
The characters learn these essential pieces of
information after accepting the Job.
The Score: A document sheaf containing information
that can be used to blackmail Senator Benjamin Vargas.
The documents are in the possession of a Hester
Felcourt, a noblewoman.
Time Limitations: The crew has one day (two
segments) to complete the Job. They must have finished
the Job by the end of the night segment before Lady
Felcourt reveals her information publicly, embarassing
Senator Vargas and rendering the information useless.
The Broker’s Reward: If the crew succeeds in the Job,
they receive 1 XP tied to the Vespers.
Extra Respect: If Lady Felcourt is silenced so that she
cannot reveal the contents of the documents, the crew
receives an additional 1 XP.
Extra Respect: If Lady Felcourt, her assistant Alice
Farrier, and all of her sycophants are not physically
harmed, the crew receives an additional 1 XP.

Senator Vargas

his early thirties with oiled black hair and gold
replacement incisors. He was born in Westport and
moved to New Dunhaven as a teenager, seekng
his fortune. In just over a decade, he has made a
name for himself as a visionary merchant, building
a modestly-sized trade company specializing in
shipping to and importing from Westport.

times. Usually, they are in the possession of Alice

Mistress

pirate women who ply the sea near the Sunken

séances are actually real. Only the Gravediggers
know this, and usually only those in the higher
ranks of the cartel; the other cartels believe her
to be a charlatan. The Gravediggers allow her to
practice her sorcerous arts, which they would
normally consider to be their domain due the
nature of her sorcery, because she has a greater
mastery of her ability to contact the spirits of the
dead than anyone in the cartel. She often performs
her séances at the cartel’s request.

The Veiled
Garden

✦✦ The Veiled Garden is a private dining
establishment catering to nobles and merchants
featuring a number of outdoor dining areas that
are contained within a massive hedge maze. Each
table is located at a dead-end in the hedge maze,
with some tables small enough for two people
to share for an intimate dinner, while others can
accommodate over a dozen people.
✦✦ The Veiled Garden is a favorite meeting place for
the wealthy because it offers a perfect place to have
secret meetings out in public. It is considered to
be “neutral ground” by many of the city’s rich and
powerful citizens, and the owners and staff know
this and cultivate this reputation.

in the garden, who use smaller side passages
(whose entrances are concealed by overgrowth)

are rarely seen (many patrons of the establishment
do not even believe that the guards exist, and
claim that they are a rumor spread by the owners
of the Veiled Guarden) and use the side passages
to ensure that no patrons have brought an undue
number of their own guards along with them.

✦✦ The owners of the Veiled Garden are paying
protection to money to the Family, and are behind
on their payments. While the Family has sent some
stern warnings and paid a few visits with some of
their tougher-looking enforcers, so far the cartel
has not had to resort to violence, and sporadic
payments are still trickling in. The owners are
desperate for a way to either get out from under
the Family’s control, or pay off their debts.
Alice Farrier
Members of the crew who know about commoners
know these things. Otherwise, they can do legwork
to learn them without making die rolls.
✦✦ Alice Farrier is a constantly-flustered personal
assistant to Lady Felcourt. She has blonde hair
that she keeps in a tight bun and wears subtle, but
expensive, makeup. She looks like she puts herself
together well in the morning, but a few hours into
her day she is thoroughly disheveled.

✦✦ Alice Farrier has been threatening to quit for years.
Every time, Lady Felcourt talks her into coming
back, promising higher pay and lighter duties.
✦✦ Alice is immune to Lady Felcourt’s charms. She
speaks freely and is charged by her mistress with
being the voice of reason, conscience, and doubt
for House Felcourt, even when in public. Few other
nobles’ servants receive such leeway, and even
other nobles are a bit intimidated by her.
Liquid Charm
Perfume
Members of the crew who know about medicine
know these things. Otherwise, they can do legwork
to learn them without making die rolls.
✦✦ Liquid Charm addles peoples’ wits when they
are close enough to talk to the person wearing it.
The perfume combines with the wearer’s natural
pheromones to produce a small cloud of chemicals
that has an immediate effect on anyone close by.

your own brain, causing permanent damage.

person to build up a resistance to it.

though the punishment is light. The real danger
of being caught with it is the devastating effect it
could have on a reputation should it come out that
they were using it to gain leverage over their peers.
For the Judge
These notes about the Job include a tally of
enemies, exceptional ways for characters to earn
heat, and ways for the Judge to spend heat.
In the execution of the Job, the players need to account
for the following obstacles:

If the crew attempts to pull off the final scene at the Veiled
Garden, they must also account for:

that protects the restaurant’s patrons
Major Complication (Spend 12 Heat)
Use this in a scene that includes both Lady Felcourt and
Galvin Tsumeko. An angry, inebriated Benjamin Vargas
shows up to try and reclaim the sheaf of incriminating
documents from Lady Felcourt, and he is prepared
to use violence to do so if he must. The confrontation
between Senator Vargas and Galvin Tsumeko would
certainly draw the attention of the City Watch, causing
the documents to be taken into evidence by Crown
investigators. The crew must convince (or otherwise
deter) Senator Vargas from following through with his
plan. Use the statistics for the scheming senator for
Senator Vargas, but with only 100 luck; his inebriation
has already depleted half of his luck.
Special Heat Rules: If this complication is introduced
during a legwork scene (not the final scene), and Senator
Vargas is killed, his murder generates Heat for the crew
as normal (ignoring the normal rules for complications
not generating more Heat).
