Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Research II – Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)

Module on Methods in Scientific Research Reports (IMRAD)!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or

facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum

while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also

aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into

consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to

manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist

the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Lesson
Method Sections in Scientific
4 Research Reports (IMRAD)

Method Section is the second part of the IMRAD format necessary in delivering
a substantial and easy to comprehend research report. This part addresses how the
research was conducted. This contains details such as the population of the
research, the sample, techniques, and the tools used. The main objective of the
method section in IMRAD is to provide a thorough explanation on how research was
conducted.

The succeeding parts of this module will help you to better recognize the
importance of the method section in scientific research report.

3. characteristic that must be

exercised by a good researcher
4. one of the characteristics of a
good researcher
5. element helpful in accomplishing
a science investigation
8. one way of presenting an
introduction
9. presents the research topic in a
brief and easy to comprehend
manner

7. other term for researcher

4
What’s New

After knowing how research report shall be presented in a way that will
motivate readers, it is now time to move on the next stage of IMRAD format.

Let us first answer the following.

Jumbled Letters: Study the jumbled letters and try to rearrange the letters in
order to form a word.

5
Let us now decode the message hidden below.

Cryptogram.

The previous activity provides the impressions on the different methods

applied in scientific research report. Specific method/s could be more appropriate in
a particular topic in research to achieve its goal.

The method to be used in your research report depends on your objectives.

For example, you are working on a qualitative research, this type of research would
be better if survey method is used than interviews. This is because surveys are
usually intended to give short but precise answers than extensive answers in
interviews.

6
What is It

The main purpose of the method section in a scientific research report is to

provide a detailed description of how the research was conducted in order to make it
replicable and transparent. In this way, other science investigators will be able to
understand the process, compare and contrast findings from other research, use
relevant information, and if necessary, replicate the research.

Method section of IMRAD usually presents the nature of data as to how they
are gathered and analyzed to rationalize the choice that has been made.

In terms of technicality in writing the method section, verbs used are usually
in the past tense because the collection of data and analysis are already completed
when the researcher begins working on the report. Moreover, passive voice is often
suited in this section to give emphasis on the process itself and not on the researcher.

Cotos, Huffman and Link (2017), studied the IMRAD through 30 disciplines
and were able to identify three moves that frequently appear in the method section
of research report. However, these three moves appear in every research report. In
addition, these moves are not designed in a sequential manner; researchers can shift
from move 1 to move 2 in a cyclic way.

Example of moves as identified by Cotos, Huffman and Link (2017)
