Setting Objectives for Every Organizational Level
Objective setting should not stop with top management's establishing company wide
performance targets. Company objectives need to be broken down into performance
largels for each of the organization's separate businesses, product lines, functional
departments, and individual work units. Employees within various functional areas
‘and operating levels will be guided mich better by specific objectives relating directly
to their departmental activities than broad organizatonal-level gous. Objective se
ting is thus a top-down process that must extend tothe lowest organizational levels.
‘his means that each organizational unit must take care to set performance targets
that support—rather than conflict with or negate—the achievement of company'vide
strategic and financial objectives.
"The ideal svation is team effort in which each organizational unit strives to pro-
duce results that contribute to the achievement of the company’s performance targets
