(Page 2) Last week, Nick got some money for his
birthday. He and his sister Mary went to a
department store because he wanted to buy some
toys. They don’t go shopping in a department store
very often, so Nick was very excited. There was so
much to see and Nick was looking up, down, left,
right, here, there, and everywhere. “The toys are on
the sixth floor,” said Mary. “Where are the
elevators?” asked Nick.
(Page 4) The arrow started to flash and the bell went
‘Bing’. The doors of the elevator opened. “Let’s take
this one! It’s going up,” said Mary. “Wow! Look at
all the people! It’s almost full,” said Nick. There was
an old lady, a young man, a boy, a young woman
with a baby, and lots of other people. Nick and Mary
are not very big so they squeezed into the elevator.
The doors closed and the elevator went up.
(Page 6) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the second
floor. The doors opened. It was so full of people. The
young man got out. He was wearing a cool shirt and
a pair of sunglasses. “Why is he wearing
sunglasses?” asked Nick. “It isn’t sunny.” “Shhh!”
said Mary. “Don’t ask silly questions.” The young
man walked into the men’s clothing department. The
doors closed and the elevator went up.
(Page 8) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the third floor.
Teenage clothes are on the third floor. The old lady
got out at the teenage fashion department. She used
a walking stick and walked very slowly. “She looks
really old!” said Nick. “Why is she getting out here?”
“Shhh!” said Mary. “Don’t ask silly questions.” Mary
didn’t want the old lady to hear Nick’s question. The
doors closed and up went the elevator.
(Page 10) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the fourth
floor. The boy got out with his mother. He had very
long hair like a girl. His mother took him by the arm.
He didn’t want to go with his mother. “Why does he
look so unhappy?” asked Nick. “Shhh!” said Mary.
“I said stop! No more silly questions!” The doors
closed and the elevator went up.
(Page 12) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the
children’s department on the fifth floor. The elevator
is not so full of people now. The young woman got
out with her baby. Her baby was in his stroller and he
was crying loudly. “Why is that baby crying so
much?” asked Nick. “Shhh!” said Mary. “I said stop!
No more silly questions!” The baby’s mother was not
very happy because her baby was too noisy.
Level Four
(Page 14) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the sixth
floor. The elevator doors opened. The sixth floor is the
toy department. “This is where we get out,” said
Mary. “Great,” said Nick. “Look at all the toys. Can
we go and look at the computer games?” It’s Nick’s
favorite place in the department store. “OK! Let’s
go!” Nick ran over to look at the computer games. He
wanted to buy a game for his computer.
(Page 16) Nick was so happy to see all the computer

sports games. He looked at the puzzle games. He
looked at all the games. Mary doesn’t like to play
computer games but she waited with her brother. Nick
could not decide which game to buy; he liked all the
computer games. Mary waited a long time. Then
finally, Nick picked up a computer game. “I want this
one,” he said. “At last!” said Mary.
(Page 18) Nick and Mary walked over to the counter.
The lady put Nick’s computer game in a bag. “That’s
fifteen dollars, please,” said the lady. Nick took out
his money to pay the lady, and he looked up. “I
know him!” said Nick, pointing at the television. “He
was in the elevator.” “You’re right!” said Mary.
“That’s Ricky Dee. I love his songs.” Nick paid the
lady, and they went back to the elevator. It was time
to go home.
(Page 20) Mary was happy to see her favorite singer
and Nick was happy to have a new computer game.
“Maybe we’ll see Ricky Dee again in the elevator,”
said Mary. “I wish I was a rock star,” said Nick. “I
could be Nicky Dee.” “Stop dreaming,” said Mary.
‘Bing’ “There’s the elevator now. Come on, it’s time
to go home.” The elevator was going down. There
were not many people in the elevator this time.
(Page 22) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the fifth
floor again. The lady with the baby got in. But this
time, the mother was in the stroller. She was very
tired. The baby was pushing his mother in the
stroller. He made his mother very, very tired. “Why is
she sitting in the stroller?” asked Nick. “Shhh!” said
Mary. “She’ll hear you.” Everybody in the elevator
looked at the baby. What a super-baby!
(Page 24) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the fourth
floor again. The doors opened. The boy and his
mother got in. The boy’s long hair was now short. His
angry mother was now happy. She liked her son’s
short hair. The boy wasn’t happy. “Poor boy! What
happened to his hair?” asked Nick. “Shhh!” said
Mary. “I think it looks very nice.” Mary liked the
boy’s short hair. The doors closed and the elevator
went down.
(Page 26) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the third
floor. Wow! The old lady got into the elevator in
some new clothes. She was wearing a cool cap,
sunglasses, a cool jacket, pants and a shirt. “Is that
the same old lady? What happened to her?” asked
Nick. “Shhh!” said Mary. “She looks so cool!” The
old lady was even listening to music with her
headphones. She was a very cool grandmother.
(Page 28) ‘Bing’ The elevator stopped at the second
floor. The elevator was full of people again. Ricky Dee
ran into the elevator. He was wearing different clothes
and he was in a hurry. He didn’t look very happy. He
wanted to get away from all his fans. His fans follow
him everywhere they can. They wanted to take his
photograph. “That’s Ricky Dee,” said Nick. Mary
looked at the young man, “Are you sure that’s him?”
asked Mary. “Shhh!” said Nick. “Don’t ask silly
questions.”
(Page 30) ‘Bing’ The elevator doors opened. On the
first floor, there were lots of people. Ricky Dee ran out
of the store. He didn’t want his fans to see him. He

didn’t want them to take his photograph. Nick and
Mary got out of the elevator, too. They watched Ricky
Dee run out of the department store. “Do you really
want to be a rock star, Nick?” asked Mary. “Not any
more,” said Nick. “Maybe I want to be a movie star.”
