Subject: Report on a Physician Assistant Career

On Friday, February 5, 2021, I attended a conference arranged by the organization “Online

Shadowing PR”, the same was held remotely via Zoom video conference. The conference
convened at 7:00pm and was presented by the program director Charity M. Ramsey Irrizary,
MCMSc, PA-C and the academic coordinator Laura Juárez, MPAS, PA-C, MPH of the
Physician Assistant Program from the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Caguas, Puerto
Rico. The presenters discussed the requisites of admission, differences and similitudes of a
Medical Doctor and a Physician Assistant, and other information about the program. The
meeting adjourned at 9:05pm. The purpose of this report is to present some of the most important
details learned throughout the conference.

Physician Assistant (PA)

Physician Assistants are health professionals that are able to diagnose illnesses, design treatment
plans, prescribe medications, and many other responsibilities regarding a patient’s care. PAs are
capable of reducing wait times, serving as primary care providers, reducing hospital infections,
increasing patient satisfaction and increasing patient volume and revenue.

Physician Assistant (PA) vs Medical Doctor (MD)

Primary differences between a PA and an MD:
A. Education
1. MD takes from 7 to 11 years after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
2. PA takes 2 and a half year after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
B. Lifestyle
1. MDs have a hectic life.
2. PAs have a flexible schedule.
C. Specialties
1. Most MDs have only one specialty.
2. PAs can have multiple specialties.

Conclusion
This conference was really helpful, not only to me, but to the other premed students that
attended. It shows the diversity of the healthcare community and the different programs we can
apply to in addition to an MD. Becoming a PA is an excellent alternative, because it brings to the
table a better work/life balance but with the benefits of being an active professional in the
healthcare society. Getting to know more about different careers when attending these types of
conferences, can help future professionals get a better idea of the available options out there.
