Session 64: Theory of Topology

Optimization
Recap…..!!!!
In Session 63 : We Have Learned
 How to perform Radiant Power Analysis in ANSYS Software.
In Session 64 : We will learn
 What is Topology Optimization
Topology Optimization

Topology Optimization is a design tool for determining shapes that can satisfy design
criteria while minimizing or maximizing an objective such as:
• Minimize mass or volume
• Minimize compliance (maximize stiffness)
• Maximize natural frequency

Why is it needed?

• It helps to create initial design concepts

• It helps to create novel and improved design concepts that are lightweight and stiff
• Ensures the design criteria are satisfied
Example:

How does it work:

• Finds the best distribution of material given an optimization goal and a set of
constraints
• Takes solid mass of material in any shape and removes material to achieve the
following:
• Minimize or maximize an optimization objective such as mass or compliance
• Satisfy a set of constraints such as maximum stress, displacement, or natural
frequency
ANSYS Topological Optimization

Topology optimization: Basic steps

• Drag and drop the ANSYS Topology Optimization tool from the Toolbox onto the
Model cell of a static analysis system.
• In ANSYS Mechanical, add design optimization controls through the ANSYS Topology
Optimization outline. This toolbar allows the user to:
• Define optimization region
• Define optimization objective
• Specify response constraints
• Specify manufacturing consraints
• After the topology optimization is solved, the user can post-process the results to
show optimized topology density isosurface plots.
• Export the optimized structure to a STL file.
• Can generate solid geometry from STL file in SpaceClaim (reverse engineering
the geometry)
• Bring the reverse engineered geometry into Mechanical and perform the further
Analysis.
