MIET 1076 Mechanical Vibrations Tutorial Questions (wk8)

Q1. A single cylinder reciprocating compressor on spring support has the following
data:
Engine mass = 600 kg,
Equivalent mass of reciprocating parts = 20 kg,
Stroke of piston = 225 mm (motion is assumed to be harmonic, stroke of
the piston means the total travel of the piston),
Static deflection of spring due to weight of compressor = 40 mm, and
Ratio of consecutive amplitudes in free vibration = 1.00 to 0.55.
Determine (i) the amplitude (in mm) of compressor vibration at 320 rpm; (ii) the
force transmissibility expressed as a decimal fraction; and (iii) the force (in N)
transmitted to the base at this speed.

Q2. A 40 kg machine is attached to a base through a spring stiffness 2×104

N/m in parallel with a dashpot of damping coefficient 150 N·s/m. The base is
given a displacement 0.15sin30.1t (m).
(1) Determine the vibration displacement amplitude of the machine;
(2) Calculate the displacement transmissibility of the system;
(3) Is this a good system from vibration point of view?
(4) If not good enough, what is the most effective way to improve?

Q3. The base of a damped spring-mass system with m = 25 kg and k = 2500 N/m is subjected to a harmonic
excitation y(t)= Y0sinωt. The vibration amplitude of the mass is found to be 0.05m when the base is excited at
the natural frequency of the system with Y0 = 0.01m. Determine the damping constant of the system.
