Upgrade of old kiln systems for clay calcination

Background
The present project aims to find an efficient solution for
a)
clay calcination process without compromising the
quality of the product.

This project is motivated by the need for low carbon

dioxide (CO 2 ) materials, today the cement industry
accounts for around 8% of global CO 2 emissions where
about 60% comes from the calcination process of
limestone. In this prospective, calcined clay is an
alternative material source due to its high availability
and very low associated CO 2 release. However, to
obtain a suitable product regarding color, finenesses
and compressive strength, clay should be processed b)
using the appropriated process settings such as
temperature, retention time and oxygen, Fig. 1.
Nowadays, the best process to reach these conditions is
using hot gas calcination, however the equipment is
costly and inviable for many of the cement producers.

Objective kiln both used for clay
The present study will show a feasibility study of calcination
retrofit upgrade of kilns to clay calcination. Moreover,
the main differences of the two process: gas suspension calciner and kiln retrofit
regarding process and quality of the final material.
The project will contain a literature review of different techniques including process
and quality of the final product.
