COLLEGE AWARENESS WEEK

Our final counseling lesson assisted students to explore future careers.

To mark the end of this theme, we are dedicating May 24th - 28th to promote

educational pathways after high school.

With this college week, students can learn how to achieve their future dreams.

Levels of Post-High School Education:

Vocational Education - approx. 1-2 years or on-the-job training

Associate Degree +2 years at a community college

Bachelor Degree +4 years, with the final two being at a university

Master Degree +2 years, after attaining a bachelor degree

Doctoral Degree approx. 4-8 years, after attaining a bachelor degree

STARTING COLLEGE CONVERSATIONS

Talking to your student often about their future plans will help them prepare.

Here are a few good topics to explore at any age:

Who do you know that went to college? Ask them about their experience!

What jobs require college education? Try to map out your pathway!

What other things do you think you can do at college besides studying

and taking classes?

What colleges and universities do you know about? Try going on a visit!

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

As your student grows, the concern for paying for college may arise. Staying

up to date with financial aid information can make it easier. Financial aid is

money that helps students pay for college and includes grants, scholarships,

student loans, and work study. Find helpful information here:

FAFSA: the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step when

starting to apply for financial assistance for college

California Promise Grant (formally the BOG waiver): Waives tuition for two

years of community college

Ask your school counselors for more information!

PLANIFICANDO PARA EL FUTURO
