The 2017 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools THE CHAMPIONS Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools In support to the Republic Act 9512, or the National Environmental Awareness an Education Act of 2008, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), launched the National Search for Sustainable and Eco- Friendly Schools to recognize environment-friendly schools that have initiated and integrated in their instruction, research, extension and/or administration, programs which are environment-related in nature. The school system is a vital part of our basic learning and is seen as a powerful vehicle for change. The school's population, comprising of students, teaching and non-teaching personnel constitute a sizeable percentage of the national population. As such, any program focused on advocacy and other multi- faceted program of activities done within the school system, especially relating to environmental concerns needs to be documented, encouraged and recognized. The strengthening of sustainable and eco-friendly schools in the country had been enshrined asa priority in the ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plan for 2014-2018 and likewise in the Roadmap for the Implementation of Republic Act 9512, under the National Environmental Education Action Plan for 2014- 2018. The National Search has two main objectives. First, to encourage schools and academic institutions to become more actively involved in environmental issues at a practical and local level; and second, to develop skills and understanding among the students, faculty and school administrators in initiating active responses and increasing community awareness and participation on environmental concerns. In 2009, the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools was launched as a partnership program among the DENR, through the EMB, the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, and Smart Communications, Inc. Nine schools were declared national champions. First placers were: (1) Pefiablanca East Central School in Cagayan for Elementary; (2) La Castellana National High School in Negros Occidental for High School; and (3) Palawan State University in Palawan for College. In the 2011 National Search, first placers were: (1) Iliranan Elementary School in Negros Occidental for Elementary; (2) Camarines Sur National High School in Camarines Sur for High School; and/(3) De La Salle University Dasmarifias in Cavite for College. In the 2013 National Search, first placers were: (1) Dubinan Elementary School in Isabela for Elementary; (2) Ateneo de Davao University High School Unit in Davao City for High School; and (3) Visayas State University in Baybay City, Leyte for College Inthe 2015 National Search, first placers and recipients of the Land Bank Green Leadership Awards were: (1) Divisoria Elementary School in Isabela for Elementary; (2) Bintawan National High School in Nueva Vizcaya for High School; and (3) Foundation University in Dumaguete City for College. This 2017, as the Philippines serves as the Chair of the ASEAN's 50th Anniversary, with the theme, “partnering for Change, Engaging the World", the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools will once again recognize schools and academicinstitutions in the country, as partners for change, and dynamicallies in promoting environmental sustainability.
