Foreign policy Community of Indonesia Chapter Brawijaya’s Statement on

Myanmar Military Coup and Political Crisis
25 April 2021
Malang City, East Java, Indonesia

1. The FPCI Chapter Brawijaya Myanmar Political Crisis Meeting was held on 25 April 2021
through an online platform and conducted by the president of FPCI Chapter Brawijaya period
2020/2021, Ariel Ebenhaizer Tandian. The meeting was convened with the view to advocate the
recent military coup and political crisis in Myanmar, voice out FPCI Chapter Brawijaya’s
concern on the suffering and deaths inflicted on Myanmar's civilians, form recommendations for
relevant international organizations and discuss and exchange ideas on possible solutions.

2. As a student-run foreign policy organization founded with strategic interest to disseminate

foreign policy and international issues, FPCI Chapter Brawijaya sees the Myanmar military coup
and political crisis as deeply concerning as we believe that this recent crisis is a huge blow to the
progress of democracy around the world and in Myanmar specifically. In addition to that, the
concerning amount of human rights violations and deaths caused by the military to the people of
Myanmar is highly unacceptable as it is a clear violation of human rights, freedom, and dignity of
human beings. And as such, in accordance with the Joint Declaration of the Southeast Asian
People-to-People Region Hall on the Crisis in Myanmar as convened by Foreign Policy Chapter
Indonesia on 8 April 2021, this statement exists to solidify FPCI Chapter Brawijaya stance on the
Myanmar military coup and political crisis.

3. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya expresses our deepest condolences to the lives lost and those who have
lost their loved ones in the hands of the military and this crisis in general.

4. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya praises and commends every single people of Myanmar; especially
those who are brave to protest, voice their opinion and fight to take their country back from the
military. We admire your persistence and perseverance to keep fighting for democracy despite
risking your life and knowing the consequences, and for that, we salute you.

5. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya expresses our full support to all forms and shapes of movement; whether
in Myanmar, Indonesia, or anywhere in the world who are still struggling to advocate and fight
the Myanmar military coup and political crisis so that Myanmar people can regain their freedom
and rights to live in a peaceful democracy. We believe every single effort and contribution is
crucial, no matter how small or big it is to take back Myanmar’s democracy.

6. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya strongly condemns the Coup d’etat that took place on 1 February 2021
by the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) where they took over the country by force and arrested and
detained several high-ranking officials including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. FPCI Chapter

Brawijaya believes that this cowardly act is a clear blow toward the democratic development in
Myanmar and South East Asia.

7. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya strongly condemns the disturbing amount of violence and deaths
inflicted to the people in Myanmar by the Tatmadaw. We are enraged on the fact that the military
is using their gross approach to silence the people in Myanmar, including but not limited to kill,
torture, rape, airstrikes, and many more, and how the military also target women, children, and
the elderly, resulting in the death of hundred innocent lives. And for this, the Tatmadaw, led by
Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and the newly formed SAC (State Administration Council) must be
held accountable.

8. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya urges the military to restore freedom and peace for the people of
Myanmar by stopping the brutality and violence toward the people of Myanmar, release all
civilian and political prisoners unconditionally, restore internet connection and access for the
people of Myanmar to communicate to the outside world among other forms of freedom.

9. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya would like to reiterate that despite ASEAN fundamental principles, one
of them is non-interference in the internal affairs of one another does not mean that the ASEAN
Member States are exempt from responsibility toward Myanmar military coup and political crisis.
FPCI Chapter Brawijaya would like to encourage the ASEAN Member States to do everything
they could within their power and mandate.

10. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya expresses our appreciation for the recent ASEAN Leaders Meeting held
in ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, Indonesia on 24 April 2021 where ASEAN leaders have shown
their willingness to discuss and try to solve Myanmar military coup and political crisis by
formulating the Five Point Consensus with main focus on solving Myanmar situation. We expect
ASEAN to follow through on its Five-Point Consensus and create practical moves toward the
situation in Myanmar.

11. Furthermore, FPCI Chapter Brawijaya encourages ASEAN through its relevant bodies such as the
ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation and the ASEAN Commission on the Protection of
Women and Children to take necessary action within its own mandate to contribute to the
situation in Myanmar.

12. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya Recommends ASEAN member states to provide asylum for the victims
of the Myanmar military coup and political crisis and ensure that there will be no deportation of
those fleeing the repression in Myanmar.

13. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya urges nations with relevant power and strategic interest in the Myanmar
military coup and political crisis to set aside their interest and actively take part in restoring

democracy in Myanmar. We are deeply concerned with the fact that numerous nations have
indirectly halted or even made the situation even worse in Myanmar.

14. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya, through this statement release, would like to convey a message to the
world that the Myanmar military coup and political crisis is a threat to the development of
democracy in the world, international peace, and security. FPCI Chapter Brawijaya would like to
invite the youth all around the world to raise our voice, come together and continue to support
the people of Myanmar to take back their country and advocate the issue of Myanmar military
coup and political crisis so that each of our surroundings will be exposed on this crisis and raise
its empathy toward the suffering of the people of Myanmar.

15. With this, FPCI Chapter Brawijaya’s statement on Myanmar Military Coup and Political Crisis
serve as a start for FPCI Chapter Brawijaya to advocate on issues concerning international peace
and security. This statement is open for access for our public, relevant non-governmental
organizations, governmental organizations, and international organizations.
