ME 202 End Sem Exam (Spring 2021)

Instructions:

1. Total points: 90.

2. Exam time: 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, 27 Apr 2021
3. There are total 7 questions.
4. The examination is open to end semester notes, mid semester notes, your own hand
written notes and formula sheets.
5. Please start every problem on a fresh A4 Sheet.
6. Write down your name and roll number clearly on each and every page.
7. Share your screen recordings to TAs post exam.
8. You are free to ask any exam related questions during the exam.
9. After finishing your exam, scan your solution pages in ascending order of problem
number and then submit your solutions on MS Teams.

1. [15 points] Find the locations of the shear centers for two beam sections shown in
Figs. 1(a) and 1(b). For the crescent beam section in Fig. 1(a), the thickness t is varying
with θ as t = t0 cos θ and mean radius is a. For the section in Fig. 1(b), find the value
of c. These are two independent separate problems and have nothing to do with each
other.

2. [15 points] The Z-section of Fig. 2 is used for a beam of length 5 m which is simply
supported at its ends and loaded by a uniformly distributed vertical load of 2000 N/m.
Find the location and magnitude of the maximum tensile stress. All dimensions of the
Z-section in Fig. 2 are in mm.

3. [15 points] When the top leadership was failing to provide oxygen cylinders to COVID
patients, Zahira Parveen, a nurse helped a number of patients by providing a steel
cylinder AB full of oxygen with a gage pressure 14 MPa in Fig. 3 with a 120-mm outer
diameter and a 6-mm wall thickness. Knowing that the arm CDE is rigidly attached to
the pipe, determine the principal stresses, principal planes, and the maximum shearing
stress at point H.

4. [10 points] Determine the location and magnitude of the maximum absolute deflection
in AB between A and B when L = 7 m, M0 = 300 kN.m, E = 200 GPa and moment of
inertia I = 6 × 10−4 m4 .

5. [5 points] Determine the horizontal deflection for the elastic frame shown in Fig. 5
using Castigliano’s second theorem in terms of P, L and the flexural rigidity EI, which
is same for both members CB and AB.

6. [15 points] The cantilever beam of Fig. 6 of length L and flexural rigidity EI has an
2
initial deflection defined by the equation u0 (z) = ǫz
L2
. Find the maximum deflection and
2
the maximum bending moment in the beam when P = π8LEI 2 .

7. [15 points] To include the effect of shear buckling, Engesser changed the bending mo-
ment equation of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory as

P d2 u

EI 1 − = M,
β dz 2

where M is the bending moment, EI is the flexural rigidity, β is the shear rigidity and
P is the axial force. Now for the changed bending moment equation which includes
shear buckling through shear rigidity, calculate the critical load for the column clamped
(fixed) at one end and free at the other end as shown in Fig. 7 by first assuming that
M0 applied at the end B is zero. Then for non-zero M0 , write down the deflection u(z)
and also calculate the maximum bending moment.
