FASTENING SLIP STITCH (FST SL ST)
Fastening slip stitch – it is the same slip stitch, but it is not crocheted,
but it is made with the help of a needle. Such stitch makes the end of crocheting
invisible, and the edge of the detail - even, and additionally fasten well a thread.
Order of the actions:
1. Insert the end of a thread, left after crocheting the detail, in a needle.
2. Insert a needle from the front to the back for the both loops in a stitch next
for the last crocheted stitch. Strain a thread (photo 1a).
3. Insert a needle from the front to the back in a back loop of the last crocheted
stitch in a row (photo 2a). Again strain a thread. It is ready! (photos 3a, 4a).

ACCURATE CHANGING OF THE COLORS

I think all the needlewomen want to make the changing of the colors in the course
of crocheting less visible.
With the help of the technique which is described at this page you do not remove
this changing at all, but you can make it more smooth and organic. If you want, you
can use this technique of changing the color while crocheting any detail and any toy.
Step-by-step process:
1. In the end of the row (after which it is necessary to change the color) crochet
1 sl st in the last stitch, and 1 more sl st in the first stitch of the next row.
Cut the yarn. Thus you have 2 sl st one after another (photo 5а).
2. Take the yarn of a new color, take out a loop from the first sl st (the last one
in a row) (photo 6а), crochet 1 ch (photo 7а), crochet 1 sc from the second sl st
(the first one in a new row) (photo 8а).
3. You can fasten off a thread of an old color in the course of crocheting of the next
stitches, crocheting it together with the stitches, which you grasp (photo 9а).
4. Crochet a row according to the description of crocheting of a detail, crochet
the last sc of a row in the very same first sl st, where in the beginning we attached
a yarn (photos 10а, 11а).

THE LIST OF MATERIALS AND TOOLS

This list contains the materials used to make the presented toys.
You can use other materials at your discretion.
Yarn:
For the crocheting of the giraffe you can use any smooth yarn of any structure,
any thickness and color. All the details, clothes and accessories of the giraffe
are crocheted with a yarn of the same thickness. For the sweater you can use
a mélange, tweed or monochrome yarn, for example, you can make a striped sweater.
Used yarn: (Sport/5ply or DK/8 ply).
Giraffe Theodor:
- YarnArt Jeans №67, light-yellow (there is a new and old color according
to this number. I used an old one. For the comparison at the photo there are
both colors – a new lemon color is from above) - for the body and head;
- YarnArt Jeans №40, brown jeans - for the horns and hooves;
- Alize Cotton Gold №262, honey - for the ears and muzzle;
- Himalaya Denim №115-23, blue - for the sweater and collar.
Giraffe Emma:
- Alize Cotton Gold №67, beige - for the body and head;
- YarnArt Jeans №40, brown jeans - for the horns and hooves;
- YarnArt Jeans №71, cocoa - for the ears and muzzle;
- Himalaya Denim №115-24, terracotta (coral) - for the sweater and collar;

Indications of the colors of the yarn

Color А – the main color of the body, legs,

Tools
- the hook № 1,5 (B/1) or of the other size, matching for your yarn;
- a gobelin needle with a blunt end for sewing of the details;
- a thin needle with a wide eye for embroidering;
- eyes. I used the safety eyes Ø 8 mm (0.31”). You can choose the other eyes –
round beads, sewing plastic halfbeads, also you can crochet or embroider eyes;
- thin black thread for embroidering of lashes and brows;
- white thread for embroidering the pattern at the sweater (optional);
- buttons for the sweater and bag (optional).
- pins for attaching of the details to the body;
- scissors;
- stuffing (hollofayber).

ATTENTION !
If you crochet in the horns and ears in the course of crocheting of the head,
it is necessary to apply them by the right side to the head, by the wrong side
to yourself. The right side of the detail corresponds to the right side of the row,
with which you closed the detail, crocheting it for the both edges (photos 9-11).

If you use the safety eyes, it’s time to attach them. I use the eyes 8 mm (0.31”)
in diameter, they are inserted between the 15th and the 16th rows.
The space between the eyes is 7 stitches. (photos 13-14).
Stuff the head. In the next row it is necessary to crochet in the ears and horns,
if you’ve chosen this variant (see the page 10).

relatively to the head, it is necessary to check their symmetry.
Crochet 3 sc, insert a pin between the 3rd and the 4th
stitches of the row, count out 21 stitch forward along the row,
insert the second pin (photo 15). These are the places
where will be the lower edges of the ears. Make sure
that these points are symmetrical relatively to the muzzle
and eyes. If it is not so, crochet more stitches or undo 1-2 sc.
16 Now you can continue. Crochet in the left ear – apply it
by its right side to the head, by the wrong side to yourself
(photo 16), and crochet together 3 sc of the ear and
the head (photo 17), further 3 sc along the row, crochet
in the horn (by its right side to the head) – crochet together
3 sc of the horn and the head (photo 18), further 3 sc
along the row, crochet in the second horn with the help

ATTENTION! If you crochet Emma, then the places

of the horns and ears on the head should coincide
with the openings for them in the hat. That’s why
sew the ears and horns, if you have not
crocheted them in, strictly between the 23rd
and the 24th rows (photo 24). The spaces
between all the horns and ears - 3 stitches
between each horn and ear (photo 25).
Embroider the lashes and brows with
the thin black thread, embroider the nostrils
with the yarn of color A or B (photo 25).

crochet several more stitches or undo 1-3 sc till the edge of the bend and crochet
for the both sides 5 sc, 1 sl st in the flank of the detail (as you did for the horns).
Tighten a loop, leave a long thread enough for sewing. If you crochet in the legs
in the body, then hide a thread inside the detail, as you did for the horns.
For the second leg crochet in the last row for 6 sc more or less, so as the changing
of the colors at the hoof appeared to be at the other edge of the bend, not at
the same edge as for the first leg. It is necessary for the symmetry of the details.
In that case these changings of the colors will be at the back while crocheting in
or sewing of the details (photo 27).

The ready detail is at the photo 28. Do not cut the yarn,
continue crocheting. Apply the sole to the lower part
of the leg, it is necessary to crochet them together,
beginning from the last free halfloop of the hoof

to be at the other edge of the bend, not at the same edge
as for the first arm. It is necessary for the symmetry of the
details. (photo 34). Decorate the sole of the hoof. To do this
take a yarn of the color В. Turn the arm by the lower side
to yourself, crochet 18 sl st for the left not crocheted halfloops
along the bottom of the arm, beginning from the last free
halfloop of the hoof in the row (photo 35-36).

the right arm with the help of 4 sc. If you increased the number of sc in the beginning
of the row, then the last sc with the crocheted in arm go to the first stitches of
the next row (in this case just crochet in the 34th row as many sc less, as you’ve
crocheted before, do not move the marker). If you decreased the number of sc
in the beginning of the row, crochet this number of sc to the end of the current row
(number of the crocheted stitches in the 33rd row - 26 st).
If you do not want to crochet in the arms, and you want
to sew the arms separately, then crochet

Now it is necessary to make a small raising at one side of the neck for the slope
of the head.
51 rnd: crochet 11 sc, 1 sl st. This slip stitch should be directly at the side of the neck,
if you fold it in half, so as the arms of the giraffe will be placed symmetrically
at the bends of the neck (photos 47-48). If it is not so, crochet more stitches
or undo 1-2 sc, again crochet 1 sl st. Crochet 1 ch, turn the crocheting.
From the second loop from the hook crochet 1 sl st, 8 sc, 1 sl st, 1 ch,

If you have not crocheted in the legs and arms,
then sew them. Sew the legs at the level of the 11th row,
the arms – at the level of the 33rd row.
Sew the head
Attach the neck of the giraffe to the head with pins.
The raising of the neck should be at the back, and its front
part should join to the changing of the colors on the head 57
(photo 56-57). I recommend to take more pins and attach
the neck as equally as possible.
Sew the neck, cut and hide the thread (photo 57).
Collar of the sweater
Crochet with a yarn of the color D in back-and-forth rows
for the both halfloops. In the end of each row crochet
1 ch and turn the crocheting. 58
Crochet chain 6 ch.
1 row: from the second loop from the hook crochet 5 sc,
1 ch, turn the crocheting (5 st, this ch is not included
in the number of stitches)
2 row: 5 sc, 1 ch, turn the crocheting (5 st)
Crochet 120-130 more rows in this way, so as you can
freely wind the collar 3 times around the neck. In the end
of the last row crochet 1 ch. Tighten a loop, cut a thread, 59
leaving enough thread for sewing. Tighten a loop (photo 58).
Wind the collar 3 times round the neck, as you like,
you can twist it a couple of times. Sew the edges of the collar
together at the back (photo 59).
Straighten the collar, give it a desirable shape.
Sew the collar to the neck in several places
by invisible stitches, so as it does not 60

Tail
Take a yarn of the color А, cut three pieces
of a thread 20 cm (7.87”) long each one (photo 61).
Stretch all three threads in the center of the body
in the place of changing the colors, grasping
2 stitches in the width (photos 62-63). So you get
6 threads. Divide them in three parts, 2 threads
in each part (photo 64). Make a strong braid
3 cm (1.18”) long (photo 65). Make a strong knot
at the end of this braid with the help
of all the threads, tighten it well (photo 66).
Cut the threads at the space 1,5 cm (0.59)”

Now it is necessary to crochet round the edge of the bag with

yarn of the color F. Begin from the edge of the bottom, turning
the detail by the bigger part to yourself (photo 88). Insert
the hook through the both halves of the detail in the lower
corner, take out a loop, further insert the hook over 1 row,
crochet the first sl st (photo 88), further along the lateral side
crochet 7 more sl st through the both halves till the edge
97 of the right part of the detail (photo 89). Crochet chain 6 ch, 1 sl st
in the very same stitch – so we get a loop for the handle
(photo 90), further 4 sl st along the lateral part, 14 sl st along
the top of the detail, 4 sl st along the lateral part, 1 sl st
through the both halves of the detail, crochet chain 6 ch, 1 sl st
in the very same stitch, 8 more sl st along the lateral part
for the both halves, 11 sl st along the bottom (photo 91).
Cut the yarn and hide the end of a thread. Slightly stuff the bag (photo 92).
Bend the cover of the bag, sew by a couple of stitches, or sew a button (photo 93).
Handle. Crochet chain 71 ch with a yarn of the color F. From the second loop from
the hook crochet along the chain 69 sc, 1 sl st. Cut the yarn, leave a small
piece for sewing of the handle. Tighten a loop. Stretch the handle through
the loops of the bag, sew, fasten off and hide the end (photos 94-95).
The bag is ready! You can carry on the shoulder, or you can pull
and fold the handle in half (photos 96-97). In this case you get
the bag with a short handle, which you can give in Emma’s arms :)
