This is Joe Smith and his only daughter Sandra. She is 8 and he usually takes her for walks
in the park every Saturday. He adores her and does everything she asks him for. Last
Saturday they wanted to go to the zoo, but it rained. Perhaps they will go there next
Saturday. He has been married for 10 years and his wife has to work on Saturdays. He
wants to have more children but his wife is too busy and says they can’t afford it.
Exercise 1
Which of the sentences express: likely or unlikely future, unreal present or
past, advice or general rule. Which type of conditional does each of them
represent?
• If he had got married 15 years ago, his daughter might have been born
