Objectives:
Describe the clinical criteria for a diagnosis of diarrhoea, be able to assess
dehydration, know etiological factors and discuss management as per IMCI
protocol
Discuss strategies used to classify and treat persistent diarrhoeal conditions
Be able to calculate the nutritional requirements for normal growth for
children and put those results in practice
Be able to plot and interpret a growth chart (wt./age, wt./ht etc.) and
recognise the early signs of failure to thrive.
Discuss clinical presentation, etiological factors, and management of SAM &
MAM
Be able to counsel a mother on breastfeeding, weaning with dietary advice
for toddlers and older children.
Demonstrate competence in assessing and assisting breast feeding (to be
learnt during breast feeding sessions)
Describe the management of a child with failure to thrive and be able to
distinguish between aetiologies and discuss management of Failure to
Thrive .
Define the anatomy of long bones in children with reference to the
pathogenesis of acute haematogenous osteomyelitis in neonates, infants
and children and. List the factors that make children more susceptible to
bone and joint infections than adults.
