Briefly describe the pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy and non-healing wound using 3-5
sentences. (5 points)

Along with the predisposing factors of genetics, age, and sex, and also the precipitating
factors of diet, lifestyle, and smoking, we have the patient's present illness of Diabetes mellitus
type 1. He mentioned that there is poor management of blood sugar, leading to the symptom of
hyperglycemia. There is occlusion of the vasa nervorum or occlusion of the blood vessels that
supply the nerves due to the fact that there is poor blood circulation because of the increased
viscosity. With this, there is peripheral nerve damage leading to loss of sensation and
numbness in the patient's lower extremities. Since the patient has Diabetic neuropathy, there is
inability to recognize the presence of an open wound on the affected area, along with the fact
that the area cannot heal well because of the increased blood sugar which resulted in
multiplication of the invading microorganisms, and activation of immune response in order to
fight back the infection.
