Learning to dance also means learning a new language, on and off the dance floor. At this lesson you’ll
learn new dance terms, but more importantly you’ll learn how to move your body in new ways and expand your
social circle and make new friends.
Common Dance Terms
1. Arms in lateral position - both arms are at one side, facing either right or left, at shoulder, chest, or waist
level.
2. Brush - with the weight on one foot, strike the floor with the ball or heel of the other (free) foot, then raise the
foot from the floor in either direction.
3. Clockwise - as in the motion of a clock's hands. R shoulder is pointing toward the imaginary circle's base.
4. Counterclockwise - is the polar opposite of clockwise. The L shoulder is pointing toward the imaginary
circle's base.
5. Cut - to easily replace one foot with the other, fully removing the body's weight from the displaced foot.
6. Do-si-do - all advances forward, pass each other's right (or left) hand, step over to the right (or left), and
move backward without turning around, pass each other's left (or right) side to proper a location This
is a foreign dance that is popular in the Philippines.
7. Free foot - is one that does not carry the body's weight.
8. Free hand - is one that is not in use or is not doing anything.
9. Hands on waist - Place your hands at the waistline.
10. “Hayon-hayon” - means to put one forearm in front of the waist and the other behind it.
11. Hop - a spring from one foot to the other, in position or in any direction. In either direction, the other foot
can be lifted (in front, in rear, sideward or across).
12. Inside foot - When standing side by side, the inside foot is the foot closest to one's partner.
13. Inside hand - When standing side by side, the inside hand is the hand closest to one's partner.
14. “Jaleo” - Using walking or some kind of dance move, “Jaleo” partners turn once around clockwise (with R
elbows almost touching) or counterclockwise (with L elbows almost touching). The hands on the
waists are close together. This is a Tagalog word that originated in Spain.
15. Jump - spring forward on one or both feet, landing in either direction.
16. “Kumintang” - is the movement of the hand in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction from the wrist.
17. Outside foot - When standing side by side, the outside foot is the foot away from one's partner.
18. Outside hand - When standing side by side, the outside hand is the hand away from one's partner.
19. Place- a foot in a specific or ideal position without placing any weight on it. The foot's sole rests on the
concrete.
20. Pivot - to turn on a fixed point or position with the ball, heel, or entire foot.
21. Point - gently brush the floor with the toes of one foot, weight on the other foot.
22. “Salok” - to swing the arm downward-upward in front of the body as if scooping, with the trunk bending
inward to meet the arm's movement. It's a Tagalog word.
23. “Saludo” - With their feet together, couples bow to each other, the crowd, opposite dancers, or neighbors.
This is a Spanish word that is used in almost all Philippine dances.
24. “Sarok” - Cross the R (or L) foot in front of the L (or R), bend the body forward slightly, and cross the
hands (forearms) down in front of the R (or L) side (forearm) over the L (or R).
25. Slide - to effortlessly glide one's foot across the concrete. The movement can be completed with or without
weight transfer.
26. Stamp - to forcefully and noisily lower one's foot to the ground (as if taking a heavy step), with or without
weight transfer.
27. Step - to move forward or backward by raising or lowering one foot to a new resting position. There is a
total weight shift from one to the other.
28. Supporting foot - The foot that carries the body's weight.
