Unit #1: Familiarization

The digitized M2/M3A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle System incorporates

many improvements over previous versions of the Bradley. Almost all of
these new innovations positively affect the A3’s ability to “shoot, move,
and communicate”. A comprehensive lesson consisting of every
functional difference between the A3 and earlier versions of the Bradley
is not necessary to appreciate and understand the major improvements
in these areas. Specific areas of improvement include:

1. Electrical Power System

2. CBRN Protection
3. Diagnostics
4. Situational Awareness
5. Fire Control
6. Navigation

Unit #1: Familiarization

1. Learning Step/Activity 1: M2A3 Areas of Functional

Improvements

1. Electrical Power System: Power is supplied via a 400

amp, voltage and current regulated generator to six 12-
volt hull batteries and one 24-volt turret reserve battery.

2. CBRN Protection: A larger Gas Particulate Filter System

is employed in the A3, along with additional crew
stations outlets and heaters, for all personnel to provide
CBRN protection for the entire vehicle.
3. Diagnostics: One of the best innovations of the A3 is in
its on-board diagnostics capability. The A3 executes a
system level Built-In Test (BIT) on power up and
continually monitors system status while power is
applied. Malfunctions are displayed on the
Commander’s Tactical Display to alert the crew of
potentially dangerous faults. Degraded modes of
operation are recommended to the crew to maintain a
higher level of combat survivability. Pre-mission
checklists are built into the software to make it easier for
the operator to maintain the system. The Vehicle
Diagnostic and Maintenance Software provide an
embedded diagnostic and maintenance capability.

Improvements

4. Situational Awareness: Improvements to the sights,

combined with the advent of the squad leaders display,
voice and data radios, digital maps, alerts, malfunctions,
and advisories, digital messaging, operational orders,
etc. provide the A3 with a situational awareness
capability never before seen in any other Bradley
Fighting Vehicle.

5. Fire Control: The Fire Control system is greatly

enhanced in the A3 and is managed by the Fire Control
Processor to provide automatic elevation, lead angles,
range input (both manual and laser), and target tracking.

6. Navigation: This system combined on vehicle sensors

with Global Positioning System (GPS) data to provide the
vehicle with rudimentary navigation ability. The A3
employs the Position Navigation Subsystem (PNS), which
combines GPS data with an Inertial Navigation Unit (INU)
and a Vehicle Motion Sensor (VMS) to provide the A3
with accurate positioning and navigation data.
Combining these features with on-board digital maps,
the crew can navigate by loading and selecting routes,
waypoints and overlays.

Engine Access Door: The engine access door lift has been
modified with an electric hydraulic motor making it easier to
gain access to the engine compartment. The manual
procedure is still the back up when hydraulics are
inoperable.

WARNING

Do not raise engine access with equipment stowed on

engine access door or damage may occur to
mechanisms due to excessive weight.

1. Learning Step/Activity 2: Engine Compartment Components.

1. Reduced White-Smoke Engine: The A3 is equipped with a

reduced white-smoke engine. It should be noted that the
Pressure Timing (PT) Pump for the reduced white-smoke engine
and the standard 600-HP engine are not interchangeable.

2. TEC Transmission – Electronic Controlled Braking: The A3

vehicles are fielded equipped with the TEC-ECB Transmission.
The Electronics Assembly (EA), Interface Assembly (IA) and
transmission are neither interchangeable nor compatible with
the standard TEC EA, IA and transmission. The principle
difference between the standard TEC and a TEC-ECB is that the
vehicle has a smoother deceleration.

3. 400 Ampere Generator: Due to the A3 vehicles increased

demand for electrical power a 400-ampere generator has been
added, which controls the A3 charging system. This generator
provides a current and voltage regulated +28 VDC output to
charge the six hull batteries and turret reserve battery.

1. Learning Step/Activity 3: Digital Vehicle Distribution Box.

Digital Vehicle Distribution Box: As a result of the CM-ED program, new

components have been developed. These are the Digital Vehicle Distribution
Box (DVDB), Drivers Tactical Display (DTD), the Drivers Switch and Indicator
Panel (DSIP), and Driver Viewer Enhancement (DVE) system. The DTD, DSIP
and DVE are discussed later in the CM-ED Lesson. The primary function of the
DVDB remains the same as the old VDB, to distribute power and provide
circuit breaker protection to hull electrical subsystems. There have, however,
been some internal and external changes made that affect the operation of
some of the vehicle systems. The DVDB adds the capability to store test
programs that are used for the hull embedded diagnostics. The DVDB
provides all the electronic controls to distribute power to the same systems
that were controlled by the VDB. The DVDB also contains additional circuit
card assemblies that supply RS422 communication for the Squad Leaders and
Driver’s Tactical Displays, and MIL-STD-1553 hull communication. It also
incorporates a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus for communication with
Remote Power Controller (RPC) and Solid State Power Controller (SSPC) circuit
card assemblies. The DVDB provides RS232 bus for serial communications and
a Universal Serial Bus (USB) that will be used to extract diagnostic
information. The DVDB also provides power and data interfaces for the DTD
and DVE. It also transfers digital compass data to the DTD.

Unit #1: Familiarization

1. Learning Step/Activity 4: Hull and Turret Reserve Batteries.

Hull Batteries: The Hull Batteries provide storage of +24vdc

electrical power for vehicle starting, power when the engine is not
running. There are six Hull Batteries, including the two mounted on
the left sponson behind the driver and four beneath the floor
behind the driver. The two sponson-mounted batteries are referred
to as the Turret Electronic Batteries and supply power for the
additional electronics in the vehicle.

Turret Reserve Battery: The two turret reserve batteries found on

previous versions of the BFV have been replaced with a single 24
VDC Turret Reserve Battery. The primary role of the turret battery is
to assist in preventing surges and drops in power during turret and
gun firing operations. When you fire the 25-mm the turret has a
heavy power load the turret battery will keep power surges to a
minimum, the slip ring can only handle a 600 amp power surge, and
the turret battery will assist in this operation. Degraded gun mode
must be selected on the System Control box (SCB) so the Gun
control Unit (GCU) can receive power to fire the main gun.

Unit #1: Familiarization

1. Learning Step/Activity 5: Hull Power Box.

Hull Power Box: The Hull Power Box (HPB) is located on the left sponson,
left of the battery box. The HPB receives power from the hull batteries
and generator and controls, distributes, protects and isolates power for
the Power Control Modules (PCMs). It houses the Electronic Power Relay
that is energized by the activation of the Turret Power Switch. It also has
a NORMAL/OVERRIDE switch. In the event the turret power switch is
inoperative the Normal/Override switch enables the activation of the
turret in the Override position. This is achieved by bypassing the SCB, the
drawback being the inability to arm the vehicle weapon system and fire.

1. Learning Step/Activity 5: Power Control Module (PCM).

Power Control Module (PCM): There are three Power Control Modules
(PCM) located on the A3 Bradley. PCM’s #1and #2 are located beneath
the floor plates inside the turret. PCM #3 is located in the hull on the
right side of the vehicle directly underneath the hull fan box. PCM’s 1 and
2 are interchangeable, but must be reprogrammed, PCM 3 is not
interchangeable due to the circuit card for the FBCB2 CPU. PCM’s protect
and distribute electrical power supplied to individual equipment and
subsystems in the turret and hull.

Gas Particulate Filter Unit: As mentioned before, the new Gas

Particulate Filter Unit is located in the driver’s compartment on the left
sponson. The new GPFU is located approximately where it was on the
BFV A2 vehicle, on the left side sponson, next to and forward of the
drivers left knee.

CBRN Protection: On board CBRN protection was originally provided to

the three mounted crewmen; the driver, the gunner, and the commander.
The CBRN filtration system has been modified to accommodate all
crewmen, including dismounts, through the addition of seven new crew
stations, heaters, and a larger Gas Particulate Filter Unit (GPFU), which is
located forward of the Driver on the left sponson.

Heater, Water & Rations (HWR): The Heater, Water & Rations was
removed on all Bradley’s after the installation of the Bradley Urban
Survival Kit (BUSK) III install. However, the power supply remains to allow
for power connection to training devices.

Drivers Viewer Enhancer (DVE): Outside the hatch, you will notice a
small, bird house like, box that is located just to the right of the drivers
hatch along the vehicle center line. This is the Drivers Viewer
Enhancement (DVE) sensor and housing that replaced the older systems.
Providing you with an available, selectable, non-intrusive IR. The DVE can
detect and display a 22-inch object at a distance of approximately 125
meters and a person standing at approximately 400 meters. The field of
view for the DVE is 40 degrees of azimuth and 30 degrees of elevation.
When in use the DVE image is displayed on the Drivers Tactical Display

1. Learning Step/Activity 4: Turret Cooling Fans.

Turret Cooling Fans: Because of the increased number of digital

electronic assemblies on the A3, the turret has been fitted with three
turret cooling fans; one on either side of the radio rack, and one on the
right side of the turret step. The Turret Cooling Fan Subsystem operates
when the turret temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit and runs
continuously until temperature is lowered below 80 degrees. Two
temperature sensors are located beneath the turret floor plates; one on
the gunner’s side and one on the commander’s side. Warm air is pulled
away from the turret electronics located below the floor plates and
expelled from the turret at the bustle rack.

NOTE:
Drivers and Crew Compartment Fans may be turned on when Vehicle
is too hot. Turret Cooling Fans should never be disconnected. Their
purpose is to keep the Turret electronics from overheating. If
disconnected the Turret Electronics can overheat causing damage to
the Vehicle.

Commanders Independent Viewer (CIV): One of the most noticeable

improvements is the addition of a Commander’s Independent Viewer
(CIV) Subsystem. In previous versions of the Bradley, the commander was
limited to using the Auxiliary Sight, Commander’s Extension Relay, and
vision blocks, to assist the gunner in acquiring targets while buttoned up.
The CIV allows the commander to acquire targets by moving the
Commander’s Independent Viewer independently of turret motion. The
CIV is capable of traversing 360 degrees in azimuth and from –22 to +60
degrees in elevation. It contains a day sight video sensor and a 2nd Gen
Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) thermal night sight. It uses a Cathode Ray
Tube (CRT) Remote Biocular Display (RBD) that can be zoomed and also
switched to display the Gunner's TAS view. The CIV gives the A3 a
“hunter-killer” capacity and is the commander’s primary viewer. The
video image from the CIV can be displayed on the IBAS Biocular display
during silent watch, boresight modes, and readiness test.

digital vehicle velocity data to the INU. This is achieved by converting
odometer shaft rotation into a digital pulse to the INU for forward and
rearward motion of the vehicle.

Driver Tactical Display (DTD): The Driver’s Tactical Display (DTD) is the
control center for CM-ED. The DTD communicates with the DVDB to provide
the driver with display graphics that represent the condition and status of
the hull systems. The DTD also serves as part of the SMI to control the
following systems: Engine Access Door, Bilge Pumps, Smoke Generator,
Vehicle lights, Panel lights, DVE controls, and Chassis Diagnostic testing. The
battery, engine and transmission gauges are incorporated into the DTD with
associated warning icons. The DTD also displays the ON/OFF status of the
smoke generator, bilge pumps, turret power, and indicates whether the
TOW launcher is up or down. Navagation has also been incorporated into
the DTD to indicate vehicle heading and distances to way points. The
Speedometer and Odometer have been converted to digital readouts and
are also displayed on the DTD. The DTD may also be used to display the
image from the Commanders and Gunners sights. Keypads located on the
display bezel are used to perform adjustments to screen brightness and
contrast at your discretion.
