PRECAUTIONS
[2WD/ABS] PFP:00001
A
Precautions for Brake System EFS001MT

● Recommended fluid is brake fluid “DOT 3”.

● Never reuse drained brake fluid. B
● Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas.
● To clean or wash all parts of master cylinder, disc brake caliper and wheel cylinder, use clean brake fluid.
● Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. They will ruin rubber parts of the hydraulic system. C
● Use flare nut wrench when removing and installing brake tube.
● Always torque brake lines when installing.
D
● Burnish the brake contact surfaces after refinishing or replacing
drums or rotors, after replacing pads or linings, or if a soft pedal
occurs at very low mileage. Refer to BR-10, "Brake Burnishing
Procedure" . E
● Before working, turn OFF ignition switch. Disconnect connectors
for ABS actuator and control module or battery terminals.
WARNING: BRC
● Clean brake pads and shoes with a waste cloth, then wipe SBR820BA
with a dust collector.
G
Precautions for Brake Control EFS001MU

● If malfunction is indicated by 4WD warning lamp and/or ABS warning lamp, collect necessary information
from customer (what symptoms are present under what conditions). Find out possible causes before start- H
ing service. Besides electrical system inspection, check operation of ABS actuator.
● If malfunction is detected, proceed to trouble diagnosis after checking tire pressure and tire wear.
● Stopping distance or steering stability may be deteriorated by the following conditions. Tire size and type I
are in improper combination. Brake pads are not Nissan genuine parts.
● Fitting tires of different size on vehicle can be cause of longitudinal vibration. Always use tires of the same
size and brand. Exchange front and rear tires on the following conditions: Longitudinal vibration occurs in J
vehicle with tires of the same size and brand. After replacement, perform trouble diagnosis. 1580|None
● 2WD/ABS function may have a failure or error under following condition: There is radio, antenna, or
antenna lead-in wire (including wiring) near control module.
K
● If aftermarket parts (e.g. Car stereo equipment, CD player) have been installed, check electrical har-
nesses for pinches, open, and improper wiring.

System Description EFS001NT

ABS FUNCTION
● During ABS operation, brake pedal lightly vibrates and its mechanical noise may be heard. This is a nor- B
mal condition.
● When starting engine, or just after starting vehicle, brake pedal may vibrate. Also motor operating noise
may be heard from engine compartment. This is a normal status of operation check.
C
● When vehicle drives on rough, gravel, or snowy (fresh deep snow) road, the following conditions occur.
Stopping distance may be longer than that of vehicles without ABS.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS PFP:00004
A
How to Proceed with Trouble Diagnosis EFS001MZ

BASIC CONCEPT
● The most important point to perform trouble diagnosis is to understand vehicle systems (control and B
mechanism) thoroughly.

● It is also important to clarify customer complaints before inspec-

C
tion.
First of all, reproduce symptom, and understand it fully.
Ask customer about his/her complaints carefully. In some cases,
it will be necessary to check symptoms by driving vehicle with D
customer.
CAUTION:
Customers are not professional. It is dangerous to make an E
easy guess like “maybe the customer means that...,” or
“maybe the customer mentions this symptom”.
SEF234G
BRC

● It is essential to check symptoms right from the beginning in

order to repair a malfunction completely.
G
For intermittent malfunction, reproduce symptom based on inter-
view with customer and past examples. Do not perform inspec-
tion on ad hoc basis. Most intermittent malfunctions are caused
by poor contacts. In this case, it will be effective to shake sus- H
pected harness or connector by hand. When repairing without
any symptom diagnosis, you can not judge if malfunction has
actually been eliminated. I
● After completing diagnosis, always erase diagnostic memory.
Refer to BRC-19, "SELF-DIAGNOSIS" . SEF233G

J
● For intermittent malfunction, move harness or harness connector by hand. Then check poor contact or
false open circuit.
● Always read “GI General Information” to check general to confirm general precautions.

ASKING COMPLAINTS
● Complaints against malfunction vary depending on each person. A
It is important to clarify customer complaints.
● Ask customer about what symptoms are present under what
conditions. Use information to reproduce symptom while driving. B
● It is also important to use diagnosis sheet so as not to miss infor-
mation.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS
[2WD/ABS]
Self-diagnosis (With South Africa Models) EFS00286

FUNCTION
● When a problem occurs in the ABS, the ABS warning lamp on the instrument panel comes on. To start the
self-diagnostic results mode, ground the self-diagnostic (check) terminal located on “Data link connector”.
The location of the malfunction is indicated by the ABS warning lamp flashing.
SELF-DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
1. Drive vehicle over 30 km/h (19 MPH) for at least one minute.
2. Turn ignition switch “OFF”.
3. Ground terminal “9” of “Data link connector” with a suitablehar-
ness.
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” while grounding terminal “9”.
Do not depress brake pedal.
Do not start engine.

SFIA0967E

5. After 3.0 seconds, the ABS warning lamp starts flashing to

indicate the malfunction code No. (See NOTE.)
6. Verify the location of the malfunction with the malfunction code-
chart. Refer to BRC-17, "Malfunction Code/Symptom Chart" .
Then make the necessary repairs following the diagnostic pro-
cedures.
7. After the malfunctions are repaired, erase the malfunction codes
stored in the control unit. Refer to BRC-17, "How To Erase Self-
Diagnostic Results (Malfunction Codes)" .
8. Rerun the self-diagnostic results mode to verify that the malfunc-
tion codes have been erased. SFIA0968E

9. Disconnect the check terminal from the ground. The self-diag-

nostic results mode is now complete.
10. Check ABS warning lamp for deactivation after driving vehicle
over 30 km/h (19 MPH) for at least one minute.
11. After making certain that ABS warning lamp does not come on,
test the ABS SELF-DIAGNOSIS in a safe area to verify that it
functions properly.
NOTE:
The indication terminates after five minutes. However, when the igni-
tion switch is turned from “OFF” to “ON”, the indication starts flashing
again. SFIA0967E

HOW TO READ SELF-DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS (MALFUNCTION CODES)

1. Determine the code No. By counting the number of times the ABS warning lamp flashes on and off.
2. When several malfunctions occur at one time, up to three code numbers can be stored; the latest mal-
function will be indicated first.
3. The indication begins with the start code 12. After that a maxi-mum of three code numbers appear in the
order of the latest one first. The indication then returns to the start code 12 to repeat (the indication will
stay on for five minutes at the most).

BRC-16

HOW TO ERASE SELF-DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS (MALFUNCTION CODES)
1. Disconnect the check terminal from ground (ABS warning lamp
ill stay lit). E
2. Within 12.5 seconds, ground the check terminal 3 times. Each
terminal ground must last more than 1 second. The ABS warn-
ing lamp goes out after the erase operation has been com- BRC
pleted.
3. Perform self-diagnosis again. Refer to BRC-16, "Self-Diagnosis

PRECAUTIONS
[4WD/ABS] PFP:00001

Precautions for Brake System EFS001E5

● Recommended fluid is brake fluid “DOT 3 ”.

● Never reuse drained brake fluid.
● Use flare nut wrench when removing and installing brake tube.
● Always torque brake lines when installing.
● Burnish the brake contact surfaces after refinishing or replacing
drums or rotors, after replacing pads or linings, or if a soft pedal
occurs at very low mileage. Refer to BR-10, "Brake Burnishing
Procedure" .
● Before working, turn OFF ignition switch. Disconnect connectors
for ABS actuator and control module or battery terminals.
WARNING:
● Clean brake pads and shoes with a waste cloth, then wipe SBR820BA
with a dust collector.
Precautions for Brake Control EFS001E6

● If malfunction is indicated by 4WD warning lamp and/or ABS warning lamp, collect necessary information
from customer (what symptoms are present under what conditions). Find out possible causes before start-
ing service. Besides electrical system inspection, check operation of ABS actuator.
● If malfunction is detected, proceed to trouble diagnosis after checking tire pressure and tire wear.
● Stopping distance or steering stability may be deteriorated by the following conditions. Tire size and type
are in improper combination. Brake pads are not Nissan genuine parts.
● Fitting tires of different size on vehicle can be cause of longitudinal vibration. Always use tires of the same
size and brand. Exchange front and rear tires on the following conditions: Longitudinal vibration occurs in
vehicle with tires of the same size and brand. After replacement, perform trouble diagnosis. 1580|None
● 4WD/ABS function may have a failure or error under following condition: There is radio, antenna, or
antenna lead-in wire (including wiring) near control module.
● If aftermarket parts (e.g. Car stereo equipment, CD player) have been installed, check electrical har-
nesses for pinches, open, and improper wiring.

ABS FUNCTION
● During ABS operation, brake pedal lightly vibrates and its mechanical noise may be heard. This is a nor-
mal condition.
● When starting engine, or just after starting vehicle, brake pedal may vibrate. Also motor operating noise
may be heard from engine compartment. This is a normal status of operation check.
● When vehicle drives on rough, gravel, or snowy (fresh deep snow) road, the following conditions occur.
Stopping distance may be longer than that of vehicles without ABS.
4WD FUNCTION
● Electronically controlled 4WD is controlled by the same control module as that for ABS (4WD/ABS control
unit). 4WD/ABS control unit controls both electronically-controlled 4WD and ABS, based on input signals
from several sensors.
● If electrical system-related malfunction occurred in 4WD/ABS system, control unit illuminates the following
lamps: 4WD warning lamp and/or ABS warning lamp on meter control unit assembly. This notifies driver of
malfunction. At the same time, control unit indicates malfunctioning part detected by self-diagnosis with
flashing pattern of LED. Indication on electronic system diagnosis tester (CONSULT-II) corresponds to
this flashing pattern as shown below.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS PFP:00004
A
Fail-Safe Function EFS001EA

● If a malfunction occurs in 4WD/ABS electrical system, and control unit detects the malfunction, 4WD
warning light on gauge turns ON to inform driver of system malfunction. B
● When 4WD and ABS warning lamp is ON, vehicle is in 2WD.
How to Proceed with Trouble Diagnosis EFS001EB

BASIC CONCEPT C
● The most important point to perform trouble diagnosis is to understand vehicle systems (control and
mechanism) thoroughly.
● It is also important to clarify customer complaints before inspec- D
tion.
First of all, reproduce symptom, and understand it fully.
Ask customer about his/her complaints carefully. In some cases, E
it will be necessary to check symptoms by driving vehicle with
customer.
CAUTION: BRC
Customers are not professional. It is dangerous to make an
easy guess like “maybe the customer means that...,” or
“maybe the customer mentions this symptom”.
G
SEF234G

● It is essential to check symptoms right from the beginning in

order to repair a malfunction completely. H
For intermittent malfunction, reproduce symptom based on inter-
view with customer and past examples. Do not perform inspec-
tion on ad hoc basis. Most intermittent malfunctions are caused
I
by poor contacts. In this case, it will be effective to shake sus-
pected harness or connector by hand. When repairing without
any symptom diagnosis, you can not judge if malfunction has
actually been eliminated. J
● After completing diagnosis, always erase diagnostic memory.
Refer toBRC-58, "SELF-DIAGNOSIS" . SEF233G

K
● For intermittent malfunction, move harness or harness connector by hand. Then check poor contact or
false open circuit.
● Always read “GI General Information” to check general to confirm general precautions. L
