Tips to write a good
descriptive paragraph

1. Observe carefully: Look at the world

around you. Doing this will help you give added
details while writing a description.

2. Form central impressions: What do

you see, in general, when you observe? Note it
down.
3. Select specific, concrete details to
support your impressions:
• For example while observing a room; you may
have formed impressions of its furniture,
decor and its overall layout.
• You can support your impressions with
specific details, which will give your
description a realistic touch.
• For instance, your impression of a room may
be a cluttered and disorganized place.
Concretise your impressions by describing its
furniture.
4. Organise the details: Organise your
thoughts. Structure your description in such a
way that one thought flows into the other.

5. Use all your senses to write the

description: The description should paint a
picture in the reader’s mind. It should use words
to describe feelings, sights, sounds, scents and
touch.
