English Adverbs of
Frequency: Rules
With adverbs of
frequency in English,
you have to be
especially careful,
since they cannot be
placed anywhere in
the sentence.
Depending on the
type of verb, we will
use it in one position
or another, taking into
account that, like
almost everything in
English, there is also
some exception that
you have to learn.

In the case of
adverbs of frequency,
the general rule is
that they are placed
before the verb:

I always go to bed at
10 at night. - I always

go to sleep at 22:00.
He never says "good

gets to the office. -
He never says good
morning when he
gets to the office.
As you can see the
basic structure of the
sentence would be:
Subject + Adverb of
frequency + Main
Verb + Complements.

In the case that the

adverbs of frequency
accompany the verb
to be, they will be
placed after:

She is always happy.

- Always happy.
You are never on
time. - You're never
on time.

In this case, the

structure is different
from the previous
one: Subject + Verb
Be + Adverb of
frequency +
Complements
You are probably
wondering what
happens if it is a verb
that is accompanied
by a modal verb or
another auxiliary? In
that case, the
adverbs of frequency
are included in the
same way, before the
main verb:

We have never seen

New York. - We've
never seen New
York.
You can always call
me. - You can always
call me.

complicate matters a
little more, adverbs of
frequency usually,
frequently, often,
sometimes and
occasionally can be
placed at the
beginning or at the
end of the sentence.

We usually see it at
school. - We usually
see him at school.
I drink beer from time
to time. - From time
to time, I drink beer.
