3.1
rated voltage U5
norniual power-frequency voltage between conductortsj and earth, for which the cable is suitable
3.2
rated voltage [I
nominal power frequency voltage between phase conductors for which the cable is suitable
3.3
nominal value
value by which a quantity is dwignaled and which is often used in tables
!~ltl"I‘E In thin standard, nominal values usually give rlse to values to be checked by tnessttretnent talong 1||t.u account apecirteu

3.4
approximate value
value which is only indicative
NOTE In this standard, values described as "appro:\timate" do not constitute requirements to be checlteu by m|=as||re|ner|I.
3.5
type tests (symbol T]
tests required to be made before supplying a type of cable covered by this standard on a general cotrunercial
basis, in order to demonstrate satisfactory performance characteristics to meet the intended application
NOTE These tests are of such a nature that, a.i'l'.cr they have been made, they need not be repeated unlua changes are made in the
cable utaterlals. desigrl or ijype of manuflacturitig process which might change the perfomianoe characteristics.

4 Voltage designation
Cables shall be designated by the rated voltages U0 and U, expressed in the form UQILE
In an a.c. system, the rated voltage of a. cable shall be at least equal to the nominal voltage of the system for
which it is intended and this applies both to the value U1] and to the value U.

11.1.1 Procedure
The thiclmess oi insulation dual] be measured in accordance with BS Eh‘ tiiitsii-1-1:l995, 8.1. Three samples shall

The cores of flat non-sheathed cables shall not be separated.
11.1.2 Etrntiintion qfresuits
The mean oi‘ the 13 values (expressed in millimetres) obtained from the three pieces of insulation from each core
shall be calculated to two decimal places and rotmded otfas follows, and this shall be talten as the mean value
of the thicitn of insulation.

11.3 Measurement of sheath thiclcuess for flat. cables
11.3.1 Measuring equipment
A measuring microscope or a profile projector shall be used, each instrument being capable of at least

Procedure for checking the efficacy of the spark testing method and equipment
E.1 Db-jieet
The object of this annex is to provide a standard procedure by which manufacuirers can determine whether their
spark testing equiprnentand methodare efl'e-cttveln detecting faults in the insulation when used for the spark
tact. in c.s.e-a.
E.2 Procedure
E.2.1 Thetestshallbecatriedouton twotestlengtlisofeore whichhave been especiailypreparedin
accordance with E.2.2 Cine oi‘ the eorts shall have the smallest ihsilation thickness of the relevant types of
cable; the other core shall have the largmt insulation tlticlmcss of the relevant types of cable.
E.2.2 The preparation of the ptutctures in the insulation shall be effected as follows.
:-1.] The insulation shall be removed from the core for a length of about 5 times the nominal insulation
thicltnem.
bji From the piece of insulation which has been removed, a segment of aboutfltl’ shall be removed; the
remaining piece of insulation shall then be replaced on the conductor {see Figure El].
cji Over the replaced piece of the tnsulauon, one layer ti-l'at1t1esive tape, c.g. polyethylene tecncphthalatc, shall be
p accd in a longitudinal direction, with an overlap. This overlap shall be situated on the opposite side of the
core to the position where the insulation was removed [sec Figure E2.)-.

E.2.3 The prepared test. pieces shall then be passed tluough the sparic test equipment at the highest speed for
which the equipment is intended, and with a voltage applied between the electrode and the oonductoc The
applied voltage shall be that. used dining cable manufacturing for the corresponding insulation thickness.
A fault shall be mgistemd as eanli test. pier.-e is passed t.h.t'ottgh the equipment.
