What ethical, social, and political issues are raised by
information systems?
Information technology involves changes in the rules and codes of conduct that have not
yet been developed. Increasing computer computing, storage, and communication
networks - including the Internet - increase access to individual and organizational
actions and maximize their impact. The simplicity and anonymity of information now
transmitted, copied, and used on the Internet poses new challenges in protecting privacy
and intellectual property. The key ethical, social and political issues raised by information
systems focus on information rights and obligations, property rights and obligations,
accountability and control, system quality, and quality of life.

What specific principles for conduct can be used to guide

ethical decisions?
Six ethical principles of ethical judgment include the Golden Rule, Immanuel Kant’s
categorical Imperative, Descartes ’Rule of Change, Utilitarian Principle, Risk Aversion
Principle, and the Ethical “No Free Lunch” Rule. These principles should be applied in
conjunction with the behavioural analysis.

Why do contemporary information systems technology

and the Internet pose challenges to the protection of
individual privacy and intellectual property?
Temporary data storage and data analysis technology enables companies to easily collect
personal data about people from a wide variety of sources and analyze this data to create
detailed electronic profiles of individuals and their behavior. Data flowing over the
Internet can be viewed in many places. Cookies and other web monitoring tools closely
monitor the activities of Web visitors. Not all Web sites have strict privacy policies, and
they do not always allow informed consent regarding the use of personal information.
Traditional copyright laws are not enough to prevent software looting because digital
materials can be easily copied and transferred to many different locations simultaneously
on the Internet.

How have information systems affected everyday life?

While computer programs have been a source of great wealth and resources, they have
had their negative effects. Computer errors can pose a real danger to individuals and
organizations. Improper data quality also deals with disruption and loss of business. Jobs
may be lost when computers replace employees or tasks become unnecessary in
reinstalled business processes. The ability to manage and use a computer can increase
economic diversity between different racial, ethnic, and economic groups and social
classes. Widespread use of computers increases the likelihood of computer crime and
computer exploitation. Computers can also cause health problems, such as recurrent
genital herpes (RSI), computer vision syndrome, and technostress.
