Local Municipality in the infrastructure Development and Design Department. The municipality 1s in Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province As part of your services and duties, you need to conduct detailed vestigations and designs, which involve geology and geotechnical engineering projects. After investigating, you have to make wntten submissions to the Technical Director (TD), Mr Boncisi Baloy! of your findings and recommendations The project that you will be investigating involves the construction of a new road between Humulani and Malayinint Villages All the known information that you know ts shown in Table 1 below Table 1. In your report you need to explain to the Technical Director some basic geological concepts 1.1 Explain to the TD what Stratigraphy is (05) 1.2 Explain to the TD the meaning of the following geological terms: 1.21 Sequence (02) 1.22 Supergroup (02) 1.2.3 Group (02) 1.2.4 Formation (02) 1.25 Bed (02) 1.3 List to the TD what are some of the physical properties of the minerals that you found on site that you will investigate in your project (08) 14 Weathenng is one of the physical processes that shape the Earth Explain it to the TD (05) [25 marks) 2 {TURN OVER} @TE2601 October/November 2019 Question 2 ‘The second part of your mvestigation involves the analysis of soils The soil samples taken on site show that you have residual soils, alluvial soils and glacial soils. 2.1 Explain to the TD what the following soils are by defining them 2.1 1 Residual Soils (02) 212 Alluwal Soils (02) 2.1.3 Glacial Soils (02) 22 Distinguish between the methods used in the AASHTO and Unified Soil classrfication systems. (06) 23 Use a labelled diagram to illustrate to the TD the water content versus volume relationship of clay soils (05) 2.4 Use a labelled diagram to illustrate to the TD the three phase system of typical soi!_ (05) [22 marks] Question 3 ‘A sample, which represents the in-situ soil on site, was collected by JW Mkhosana Laboratones in Lulekant. The details of the samples taken on site are shown in Table 4 (refer to previous page). Using the information m Table 1, calculate the following: 3.1 Bulk density (03) 82 Moisture content (03) 3.3 Dry density. (03) 3.4 Void ratio (05) 35 Porosity (03) 3.6 Degree of saturation (03) 3.7 Saturated density (03) [23 marks] 3 [TURN OVER) @TE2601 OctoberiNovember 2019 Question 4 The last part of the report includes the grading of the same soil sample that was taken on site. The results of the grading are shown below. Initial mass of the sample Is shown in Table 1 (1680 g). The mass of sample washed through 0.075 mm sieve is 100 g and the mass retained on 0.075 mm sieve after washing and drying 1s 63.6 g.
