KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
COMPUTER NETWORKING (COE 475)
LAB EXAMS

For: Telecom and Electrical (Year 4) Time: 5 Hours

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Introduction
This is a hands-on exam that tests your ability to independently configure and troubleshoot
networking equipment and software described in this document. All the questions in the lab exam
must be completed as required. They are graded based on configuration results rather than
configuration methods.

2. Lab Information
As a Network Engineer for ReyTronics Inc., you have been tasked to plan, design and implement
their networks to link their head office in Accra and their branch office at Sunyani. The company
would be using the 10.10.10.0/24 block for its branch office and 192.168.1.0/24 for its head office.
There are 6 departments in this company. The company works with 2 ISPs say MTN and Vodafone.
Vodafone acts as a Backup ISP. Using the eNSP simulation tool, do an excellent an excellent job to
satisfy the specifications outlined in the subsequent sections.

3. Address Planning
The table below presents the various departments and other vital information to assist in your
design.

Table 1: Departmental Requirements

Department Number of Valid Hosts VLAN ID
IT 14 4
Customer Service 120 5
Management 8 6
Finance 20 7
Engineering 30 8
Sales 25 9

Find the range of addresses for Each department.

Hint: m = 32-log2(N)

Note: Address in this order (for uniformity in answers)

Customer Service, Finance, Engineering, Sales, IT and Management

4. Lab Topology
The topology below would be used for the design of the network.

Fig 1: Lab Topology

5. Basic System Configurations

a. Change the device names from the default Huawei to the individual names as seen on the
topology.

b. For R1, which is your Edge router at the branch office, do the following:
i. secure the console interface with a username and a password. Username should be
your first name and password your index number. Password should be encrypted.
j. set the idle time to 2 minutes, 30 seconds.
k. Set the Shell information to “Welcome Ing. <your first name>”
l. Set the login information to “Please enter your Index number”
m. Set the date, time and time zone (Time zone name should be your last name)

6. VLAN configuration
a. Configure VLAN 4,5,6,7,8 and 9 on SW1, SW2, SW3 and SW4
On SW 1:
i. Interfaces G0/0/4 and G0/0/21 are access ports and in VLAN 4
ii. Interfaces G0/0/5 and G0/0/23 are access ports and in VLAN 5
iii. Interface G0/0/15 is an access port and in VLAN 6
iv. Interface G0/0/1 is access ports and in VLAN 8
v. Interfaces G0/0/9 and G0/0/13 are trunk ports
vi. For both trunk ports, allow all VLANS to pass except VLAN 1

On SW 2:
i. Interfaces G0/0/10, G0/0/11, and G0/0/12 are access ports and in VLAN 9
ii. Interfaces G0/0/9 and G0/0/24 are trunk ports
iii. For both trunk ports, allow all VLANS to pass except VLAN 1

On SW3:
i. Interface G0/0/15 is an access port and in VLAN 6
ii. Interface G0/0/17 is an access port and in VLAN 4
iii. Interfaces G0/0/1 and G0/0/13 are trunk ports
iv. For both trunk ports, allow all VLANS to pass except VLAN 1

On SW4:
i. Interface G0/0/21 is an access port and in VLAN 7
ii. Interfaces G0/0/1 and G0/0/24 are trunk ports
iii. For both trunk ports, allow all VLANS to pass except VLAN 1

b. Configure VLAN interfaces (VLANIF)

From Table 1, note the departments and their assigned VLANs. Refer to your calculated
address ranges in section 3 and do as follows:

On SW1, assign the last valid address in VLAN 6, 7 and 8 to their VLAN interfaces VLANIF
6, VLANIF 7 and VLANIF 8 respectively

On SW2, assign the last valid address in VLAN 4, 5 and 9 to their VLANIF interfaces
VLANIF 4, VLANIF 5 and VLANIF 9. Finally, assign the last but one address in VLAN 6 to
VLANIF 6.

7. STP configuration
a. Configure SW 5, SW 6 and SW7 to operate on RSTP
b. Set SW5 the root bridge. In the instance where SW5 fails, SW7 should take over as root.
7 should not participate in the RSTP process
c. Interface G0/0/10 of SW2
d. Enable BPDU protection on SW7

8. Routing
Let R2 represent the path to ISP 1 (MTN) and R3 represent ISP 2 (Vodafone)
a. Configure the following IP addresses:
Device Interface IP Address
R1 G0/0/0 100.100.100.1 /30
G0/0/1 First Valid address in VLAN 8
G0/0/2 50.50.50.1 /30
R2 G0/0/0 192.168.1.1 /24
G0/0/2 50.50.50.2 /30
R3 G0/0/0 100.100.100.2 /30
G0/0/1 192.168.1.2 /24
SW5 VLANIF 1 192.168.1.254 /24

b. At Head Office
i. Configure a valid IP address of your choice from 192.168.1.0 /24 for PC 1. Set the
gateway to VLANIF 1 of SW5

ii. On SW5, configure two default routes to forward packets to the two ISP gateways:
The Path through R2 is the preferred path. However, when it is not available, the path
through R3 should be used.

c. At ISP 1 (MTN)
i. Configure a static route to the branch office network through the Branch Edge
Router, R1

d. At ISP 2 (Vodafone)
i. Configure a static route to the branch office network through the Branch Edge
Router, R1

e. At Branch Office
i. Configure an OSPF process 1 and add the Interface G0/0/1 of R1 and all the VLAN
interfaces to area 0.0.0.0
ii. On R1, configure a static route to the Head Office Network through both MTN and
Vodafone. Vodafone is backup.
iii. Configure a default route on both SWI and SW2 to use R1 as their last resort.
Hint: Consider only RI, SW1 and SW2 for this configuration

9. Testing
a. Assign a valid IP address from the IT department to PC2. Set its gateway to its
corresponding VLANIF interface
b. From PC1, Ping:
i. PC2
ii. VLANIF 4
iii. VLANIF 5
iv. VLANIF 6
v. VLANIF 7
vi. VLANIF 8
vii. VLANIF 9
Successful Ping Confirms Network is Up and Running Smoothly

Good Luck!
