1. Eyelids- protects the eye anteriorly which meet at the medial and lateral corners of the eye. -Medial commissure (canthus) -Lateral commissure (canthus) Palpebral Fissure- space between the eyelids in an open eye Eye Lashes- projecting the border of the eyelids 2. Conjunctiva- a delicate membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the part of the outer surface of the eye ball. -secretes mucus which helps to lubricate the eyeball and keep it moist Conjunctivitis- inflammation of the conjunctiva. Pinkeye- infectious formed caused by bacteria and viruses. 3. Lacrimal Apparatus- consist of lacrimal glands and a numbers of ducts that drain lacrimal secretions into the nasal cavity 3 Sweat Glands in the eye 1. Tarsal glands- produce an oily secretion that lubricates the eye. 2. Ciliary glands- lie between eyelashes 3. Lacrimal glands- release a dilute sal solution (tears) Layers of the Eye 1. Fibrous layer- outermost layer that consist of the protective sclera and the transparent cornea. Sclera- thick white connective tissue or “white of the eye” Cornea- has the largest body of nerve bundles and is extremely sensitive to pain.
