Govt urges states, UTs to make black fungus
notifiable disease under epidemic act
NEW DELHI: The Union health ministry
has urged states and Union territories
to make black fungus or mucormyco-
sis a notifiable disease under the Epi-
demic Diseases Act, 1897, stating that
the infection is leading to prolonged
morbidity and mortality among Cov-
id-19 patients.
The ministry, in a letter, said that in
the recent times a new challenge in
the form of a fungal infection namely
mucormycosis has emerged and is
reported from many states among
Covid-19 patients, especially those on
steroid therapy and deranged sugar
control.
“This fungal infection is leading to
prolonged morbidity and mortality
among Covid-19 patients,” joint secre-
tary in the health ministry Lav Agar-
wal said in the letter.
The treatment of this fungal infec-
tion requires multidisciplinary
approach consisting of eye surgeons,
ENT specialists, general surgeon, neu-
rosurgeon and dental maxillo facial
surgeons, among others, and institu-
tion of Amphotericin-B injection as an
antifungal medicine.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra
Modi on Thursday asked officials to
record the spread of coronavirus
infection and its seriousness among
the youth and children, and cautioned
that the challenge posed by Covid-19
will remain as long it is present even
at a “minor scale” in the country. In
his second round of interaction with
district magistrates and field officials
on the pandemic, Modi spoke about
concerns in various quarters about
any spread of infection in the young
generation due to mutations in the
virus and asked officials to analyse the
statistics in their districts. They will
have to be better prepared for the
future, he said.
With 2,76,110 new coronavirus
infections being reported in a day,
India’s total tally of Covid-19 cases
climbed to 2,57,72,440, while the daily
deaths were recorded below 4,000
after four days, taking the toll to
2,87,122, according to the health min-
istry data updated on Thursday.
A total 3,874 fatalities were regis-
tered in a span of 24 hours. PTI

guidelines for screening, diagnosis,
management of mucormycosis, issued
by the ministry of Health and Family
Welfare (Gol) and the Indian Council

NEW DELHI: Nasal droplets fall within 2
metres from a Covid-19 infected per-
son and the aerosols can travel in air
up to 10 metres, the Office of the Prin-
cipal Scientific Adviser said on Thurs-
day, adding that proper ventilation
can decrease the risk of transmission.
In its advisory ‘Stop the Transmis-
sion, Crush the Pandemic -- Masks,
Distance, Sanitation and Ventilation to
prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2
virus’, the Office of the Principal Sci-
entific Adviser (PSA) noted that “well-
ventilated spaces play a crucial role in
diluting the Covid-19 viral load of
infected air and help in decreasing the
risk of transmission from one infected
person to the other. Saliva and nasal
discharge in the form of droplets and
aerosols carry the virus from one per-
son to another. Larger size droplets
fall to the ground and on surfaces, and
smaller aerosol particles are carried in
the air to greater distances,” the advi-
sory said. “Droplets fall within 2
metres from an infected person and
aerosols can be carried in the air up to
10 metres,” it said. PTI

Centres to be set up
for black fungus cases
NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejri-
wal on Thursday said dedicated centres will be
set up for the treatment of black fungus or
mucormycosis cases at three city government-
run hospitals. He made the announcement
after discussing the rise in black fungus cases
with officials and specialists at a meeting here.
“Three important decisions were taken at the
meeting. Centres will be set up at Lok Nayak Jai
Prakash Narayan Hospital, Guru Tegh Bahadur
Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality
Hospital for treatment of black fungus,” the
chief minister tweeted. The drugs used in the
treatment of the fungal infection will be
arranged in enough quantity and awareness
will be created among people for prevention
against the disease, he said. PTI
Delhi records highest-ever
24-hour rainfall in May
NEW DELHI: A record 119.3 mm rainfall pounded
Delhi under the impact of cyclonic storm Tauk-
tae and a western disturbance in 24 hours end-
ing 8.30 am on Thursday, breaking all the pre-
vious records for May, the IMD said on Thurs-
day. This was double the previous record
rainfall of 60 mm on May 24 in 1976. The city
had also recorded a maximum temperature of
23.8°C on Wednesday, 16 notches below normal
and the lowest in the month of May since 1951.
“A record 119.3 mm rain fell in Delhi between
8.30 am on Wednesday and 8.30 am on Thurs-
day, which is a new record for May,” said Kul-
deep Srivastava, the head of India Meteorologi-
cal Department’s regional forecasting Centre.
The Lodhi Road weather station recorded 124.4
mm rainfall during the period. PTI

centres to be shut today
NEW DELHI: Delhi’s stock of Covishield vaccine
for the 18-44 age group will last less than a day
and the city government will have to shut
more than 150 vaccination centres on Friday,
AAP MLA Atishi said on Thursday. Delhi has
received 8.17 lakh vaccine doses for the 18-44
years category so far, of which, 7.49 lakh doses
had been utilised by Thursday morning. “We
have already exhausted the Covaxin stock. The
remaining Covishield doses will last less than
a day for this category after Thursday even-
ing,” Atishi said while presenting the vaccina-
tion bulletin online. “Therefore, we will have
to shut more than 150 vaccination centres
from Friday. We appeal to the central govern-
ment to make more vaccines available for this
category immediately,” she said. PTI

which are already approved by regula-

The Stupid Boy — a ten
year old’s lesson in profit
Ram was a ten-year-old boy who
lived with his widowed mother. She
was all the family he had. His father
passed away when he was just 2
years old.
He was called “the stupid boy” by
the villagers. The reason for moniker
was tied to Ramesh tea stall that was
a few blocks away from his home.
The owner, Ramesh, thought himself
as quick witted and smart as Birbal.
Every day, when Ram was on his way
to school, Ramesh would call him
and give him a choice between a big-
ger and a smaller note — a hundred
rupee and a 10 rupee note. Despite
knowing that 100 rupees was worth
more he chose the 10 rupee note. One
day when he was again given a choice
between a 20 and a 200 rupee note, it
was a difficult choice as the 200 note
was a new one. The people at the tea
stall watched curiously and waited to
have a good laugh about it along with
a new customer named Rampraksh
Tripathi.
After hard consideration, Ram
finally chose the 20 rupees and went
on his way. “The boy is as thick as a
castle wall,’’ said Ramesh and they
had a good laugh about it. One day,
Ramprasad found the boy outside an
ice cream shop. Ramprasad asked
him why did he choose the 20 rupee
note. Ram shrugged and showed him
his ice cream. Ramprasad was still
confused and asked him again why
entertained the outgoing batch of
Class 12, but also wished them good
luck for the future. Saksham Kumar
and Riya Dhody were honoured
with the titles of Mr. CCA and Miss
CCA, respectively. Shatika was
adjudged Ms. Panache and the title
of Miss Elegant was bagged by
Nikita Somra. Gitika Sharma
emerged as Miss Fashionable, Ansh
Kilhor as Mr. Flamboyant, Ansh
Wadhwa as Mr. Dashing while
Rohan Ahuja was adjudged Mr.
Fashionable.

activities on the trees and made
notes. The students of TAFS Junior
Wing followed this year’s theme of
Restore Our Earth and made a com-
mitment to save and serve the Earth
through their words and actions.
The moral of the story is choose your
own destination wisely by analysing
the situation irrespective of others’
opinions. In the end, only our
contentment will make us happy, says
Guneet Singh, a student of Class 10 B
in the Delhi Public School, Rohini

said, “If I had chosen the profitable
deal, my game of profits would have
ended. By choosing the 20 rupee note
I get to eat this tasty ice cream every

to realise the cunning of the ‘stupid’
boy. Ramprasad thought ‘Ramesh
thinks that he is making the boy a
fool but he does not know that boy is
smarter than him’.

The framers of the Indian Constitu-
tion were the most talented, visionary
and learned statesmen. They drafted
the ideal document by incorporating

constitutions of nations across the
world. However, with the passage of
time, the ethics and principles of
moral values have been pushed to the
back seat. Gradually the ends and not
the means have taken precedence.
For a nation to be on the road to
progress, it should have a solid foun-
dation of well-educated and disci-
plined youth. So the need of the hour
is to suitably train the students by
making them well aware of the func-
tioning of the systems with the spirit
in which they were framed.
How do you motivate children to
be great citizens?
Character building or producing
good citizens is the basic responsibil-
ity of schools. Paathshalas were set
up for grooming children. The society
needs professionals who are prima-
rily good human beings. Keeping all
this in view, education at our school
lays emphasis on moral and ethical
principles. Special lectures and talks
are also organised for this purpose.
Our Prime Minister, in his annual
Pariksha pe Charcha speech, moti-
vates students by saying that they
should not just strive for high
marks. Do you say the same to
your students?
For decades, marks have been the
criteria for determining intelligence.
Students study through the year, but
the exams determine their intelli-
gence and excellence based on a sin-
gle day’s performance. A single factor
on that day can spoil their shot and
all their hard comes to naught. The
emphasis should be on acquiring
knowledge and should not be con-
fined only to a day’s performance.

Change is never static. It is some-
thing that keeps you motivated and

keep training our teachers to keep

gies and to enable them to keep pace.
This year, teachers had to resort to
virtual classroom teaching. Nobody
ever imagined that such a day would
come. However where there is a will,

will be plenty of new opportunities
and openings, but only the deserving
will have the space to grow. There
will be no place for complacency.

Your profession has many challen-
ges. What in your opinion is the
toughest?
Our profession has its share of
problems and challenges. The
schools have the most gigantic chal-
lenge and responsibility to transform
the students into not only being aca-
demically good but also sound in
mind and help develop their overall
personality. The creation and main-
taining of requisite ultra-modern
infrastructure is by no means a small
challenge as is often hit by financial
constraints. Lastly, the unflinching
co-operation and support from the
parents is an important factor.
Would you inspire your own chil-
dren to take up this profession?
I would have loved it. The present
generation has its own areas of inter-
est. I would wish they excel and put
their heart and soul in whatever the
field they would like to embark upon
and pursue.
Are you still in touch with your
teachers?
In my thoughts, I go to my teachers
with reverence and gratitude with the
feeling that I am standing here just
because of their untiring efforts, that
we learnt the subjects. We plan our
alumni meets to visit our alma mater
and pay respect personally to the
teachers who are locally stationed at
Kurukshetra, where I got my school
and college education. However, the
visits are on a decline with the pas-
sage of time due to obvious reasons.

I would like to advise my students
to inculcate the spirit of self-imposed
discipline and self-confidence.
Always have a focused approach with
determination to achieve the goal.

presents plan to control Covid,
manage future waves in India

WASHINGTON: The Rockefeller Founda-
tion on Thursday recommended a stra-
tegic roadmap to not only control Cov-
id-19 in India, but also to manage future
waves of the pandemic.
The Rockefeller report, The Road
Ahead for Smart Covid-19 Testing and
Tracing in India, outlines how India can
strengthen its testing and tracing capac-
ity to adapt to this moment, break the
surge, and control future outbreaks,
focusing on five critical opportunities.
To protect the population, it said testing
and tracing strategies should be further
strengthened and contextualised
through a cafeteria-style approach to
testing (enabling the availability of a
diverse portfolio of tests with clear gui-
dance); undertaking well-designed ser-
o-surveys; setting regulatory pathways
and quality checks on new testing tech-
components of tracing systems. Track-
ing and tracing require human and
technological resources to curb virus
outbreaks and provide dignified, destig-
matised support to patients.
It is essential to create an enabling
environment where independent
researchers can quickly access authen-
tic data and analyse it to offer valuable
insights for policymakers, the Founda-
tion said. Communication channels
should be strengthened to bust ram-
pant misinformation.
Building a detailed tracing protocol
that combines the best of manual and
digital practices and a pool of trained
healthcare workers is needed. Tracing
and tracking as strategies should also
be perfected, and practiced in times
when infections are low, so that they
can be ramped up, if next waves of the
pandemic hit, or other infectious out-

Milkha Singh tests positive for COVID-19
NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH: Legendary
Indian sprinter Milkha Singh has
tested positive for COVID-19 and is in
isolation at his Chandigarh residence.
The 91-year-old, popularly known
as Flying Sikh, is asymptomatic and
claims to be in “high spirits’”.
“A couple of our helpers earlier
tested positive and so all the family
members did the tests. Only I returned
positive on Wednesday and I am sur-
prised,” Milkha told PTI. “I am fine
and there is no fever or cough. My
doctor told me I will be alright in
three-four days. I did jogging just yes-
terday. I am in high spirits,” he added.

PARIS: Kylian Mbappe scored one goal
and set up the other as Paris Saint-
Germain stayed on course for a
domestic double by beating Monaco
2-0 to retain the French Cup on
Wednesday. PSG’s record-extending
14th cup win was given a helping hand
after a terrible defensive error gifted
an early goal to striker Mauro Icardi.
He was set up by Mbappe, who then
netted his 41st goal of the season late
on. The sides met for the third time in
the final, with PSG winning 1-0 in 2010
and Monaco triumphing by the same
score in 1985.
Monaco beat PSG twice in the
league this season, but flopped this
time and never looked like winning
the competition for the sixth time and
first since ‘91.
PSG was in control but without cre-
ating a chance until a big mistake
from Monaco central defender Axel
Disasi in the 19th minute. He failed to
control a simple pass from his goal-
keeper on the edge of the penalty area,
and Mbappe took the ball off him
before giving Icardi an open goal.
PSG created little after that, but nei-
