Typical torque / speed curves for a CS motor, Figure 2 , show that it provides
approximately twice the torque starter of an SP motor. The capacitor reduces
the motor starting current and increases the phase difference between the
currents in the starting and starting windings at 90 °.
The capacitor only works when the CS motor is started, so it can be relatively
small and inexpensive. The start winding and capacitor are disconnected by
the centrifugal start switch when the CS motor reaches about 80% of its
operating speed.
The motor then continues to operate only with its main winding energized.
CS engines are rated from 1/8 to 3/4 HP.
They operate at constant speed under varying loads, offer high operating and
starting torques and high overload capability. Their full load synchronous
speed range matches that of SP motors (865 to 3450 rpm) when supplied
from a 120/240 Vac line.
