A new student group in the Highline district, south of Seattle, wants youth to have a say in hiring
educators.
Jordyn Famimiko, a 17-years-old, is president of her school’s Black Student Union (BSU). She says
it’s critically important to get a more diverse teaching staff. Eighty percent of students in the Highline
district are youth of color. But people of color make up only 25 percent of the teaching staff. Across
Washington, youth of color are about 47 percent of the student population, and people of color consist of
13 percent of teaching staff.
“I feel like students on every level need to feel safe, they need to feel valuable,” she said. “It’s not
to say that minority students can’t connect with their white teachers, however, just right off the bat there
is some disconnect there culturally.”
Mary Belay, 17, is entering her senior year at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines and is an
officer in her school’s Black Student Union. She helped contact BSUs at other schools to form the
student association and initiate(发起) a districtwide discussion about their experiences as students of
color.
The new student group met recently with Superintendent Susan Enfield. Highline does have a
policy that calls for “hiring teams to reflect the diversity of our schools and community.” Mary said, to
put that into practice, the district needs to include youth representation.
Highline district spokesperson Catherine Carbone Rogers said in an email that the district has
included students on hiring teams for principals. The district is now considering ways to give students a
role in the teacher hiring process, though it may be difficult to include students in interviews of
candidates because those decisions often happen quickly and teachers of color are in high demand.
21. What’s the function of the statistics in Paragraph 2?
A. To tell most students in Highline are of color.
B. To call on people of color to become teachers.
C. To show people of color can’t be teachers easily.
D. To indicate unbalanced rate of students and teachers of color.
22. Why is it vital to get a teaching staff of different cultural background?
A. To have a say in hiring educators. B. To connect with the white teachers.
C. To initiate a districtwide discussion. D. To ensure students’ sense of security.
23. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Students decide which principals to employ.
B. Highline district employs youth on hiring teams.
C. The schools are in great need of teachers of color.
D. Students are given a role in interviewing candidates.

From shock treatment to deep brain stimulation(刺激), there is a long history of applying electrical
currents to the brain to treat mental health issues. Now two studies suggest the benefits of this type of
treatment might be more widespread.
In one experiment, researchers used electrodes(电极) planted in a skullcap to deliver electrical
currents to certain regions of the brains of 42 adults ageing from 60 to 76. Doctors know that brain

waves tend to fall out of sync(同步) with one another as we age. They also theorize that this disconnect
is what slows the transfer of information from one part of the brain to another—the areas controlling
reasoning and memory, for instance. To test this theory, the researchers tuned their electrical currents to
the natural oscillations(震动) of each subject’s brain waves to help get them back in sync. After the
treatment, the older adults’ scores on tests of their working memory matched the scores of a comparison
group of 20-somethings.
In another study, an electrical current was used to stimulate the vagus nerve(迷走神经). As we get
older, the branch of the nervous system that controls fight-or-flight impulses gets more active, while the
branch that affects “rest and digest” functions slows down. Together, these changes make us easier to get
a wide variety of diseases. Shocking the vagus nerve, which helps control breathing, digestion, heart rate,
blood pressure, and other bodily functions, rebalanced study participants’ nervous systems, helping
them stop the effects of aging.
24. What did the researcher find about the electrical currents?
A. They can be planted into human brain.
B. They tend to fall out of sync as we age.
C. They help the old adults remember better.
D. They have no effect on treating mental health issues.
25. What is the text mainly talking about?
A. The long history of treating mental health problems.
B. The two experimental researches on mental treatment.
C. The results of the two experiments curing mental diseases.
D. The benefits of treating the elderly with brain stimulation.
26. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A biology textbook. B. A health magazine.
C. A research paper. D. Medical directions.

This is Ella Stevens who, at just 13 years old, is fighting for a chance to drive for the most famous
team in Formula One—Ferrari(法拉利一级方程式赛车).
This fall Stevens faces a series of challenges, on and off track at the Paul Ricard circuit in France,
with the ultimate prize a place on the famous Ferrari Driver Academy as its first female racer. “It's a
very good opportunity for me,” Ella, already a British karting champion, tells CNN. “We have to do a
few fitness tests in the first phase so that they can see our driving.”
The Academy is, in fact, a breeding ground for future racing stars. Its current crop includes Mick
Schumacher, the son of legendary Ferrari driver Michael, Enzo Fittipaldi, whose grandfather Emerson
was a double F1 world champion, as well as Arthur Leclerc, the younger brother of Ferrari’s current F1
racer Charles.
On the face of it, it’s no place for a 13-year-old girl from a small village in England—who already
has a mountain to climb as a female in a sport still dominated by males. After all, a female has not raced
in F1 for more than 40 years, and just six women have taken part in a grand prix (大奖赛) weekend.
But Stevens is being supported by a popular figure in the F1 community, Rob Smedley. He worked
as a Ferrari engineer for more than a decade and is now teaching Stevens through his own Electroheads

Talent Academy.
Smedley describes Ferrari’s search for a potential female racer as a “huge step.” “Having a major
player in the sport, with such a rich history as Ferrari, leading on this has to be applauded”, he tells CNN.
“It’s absolutely amazing that they want to do this and they’re taking positive action to increase the
gender diversity within the sport.”
27. What will Ella win after fighting off a series of challenges?
A. She’ll become a karting champion. B. She’ll drive for Formula 1—Ferrari.
C. She’ll have to pass a few fitness test. D. She’ll become the first female racing champion.
28. Why is Mick Schumacher mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To make people believe he’s a famous racer.
B. To show Ferriari Driver Academy is difficult to enter.
C. To introduce that he was once a double F 1 world champion.
D. To prove Ferrari Driver Academy is home to the promising racers.
29. What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Won. B. Ruled. C. Placed. D. Grasped.
30. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Ella Stevens: the first female racer B. Ella Stevens: a promising racing star
C. Formula One—Ferrari: the world top race D. Formula One—Ferrari: a race without female

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
This super-simple trick might seem silly, but it can make a huge difference in the way a future
employer notices you. If you’ve been on the job hunt in the past few years, you’ve probably had to do at
least one phone interview. Phone interviews are becoming increasingly popular as the method
employers use to select the candidates they want to speak to in person.
31 On the one hand, the interviewer can’t see you, so you don’t have to worry about how to
dress, how to sit, or even making eye contact. On the other hand, you can’t use any of those strategies to
impress your interviewer; they form their opinion of you based only on what you say and how you
sound.
Luckily, this incredibly simple tip might be just what you need to gain an edge. 32 If you’re
wondering how your smile could possibly affect the opinion of a person who can’t see it, you’d be
surprised. 33 It makes you “sound happier, lighter, more accessible and much friendlier,”
according to career blogger Coach Joan. You’ll sound more energetic and interested right from the start,
and the person on the other end of the line will immediately feel more at ease with you.
34 Even if you feel it silly at first, you’ll quickly get used to it, and your smile will probably
help ease your nerves, too! Plus, using a mirror during a phone interview is great practice for an
in-person one, since you can’t exactly look in the mirror during one of those! 35
A. It comes down to a single word: smile.
B. When you smile you wake up every cell in your body.
C. Usually phone interviews serve as the first step in a job hunt.
D. Smiling actually has a major impact on the way your voice sounds.
E. The nature of phone interviews can be a mixed blessing.

G. Joan suggests standing by a mirror during the interview to make sure you’re smiling the entire time.

第 II 卷 非选择题部分
第二节(共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1 个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
As Covid-19 became worse in early April, more than 90% of pupils were shut out of school. Many
parents are understandably scared because Covid-19 is new, and 56 (poor) understood. Schools
are big and 57 (crowd). Small children will not observe social distancing. Caution is appropriate,
especially when cases are rising. But as we have argued before, 58 benefits of reopening schools
usually outweigh the costs.
However, the costs of 59 (miss) school are huge, too. Children learn less, and lose the habit
of learning. Online teaching is a substitute for 60 (class). Poor children, who are less likely to have
good Wi-Fi and educated parents, fall further 61 their better-off peers. Parents 62 have
nowhere to drop their children struggle to return to work. Mothers bear the 63 (heavy) burden, and
so suffer a bigger career setback. Children out of school are more likely to suffer abuse, malnutrition and
poor mental health.
So, governments should be working out how to reopen schools as soon as it is safe. Places that
64 (restart) schooling, such as France, Denmark, China and New Zealand, offer tips for minimizing the
risks. They commonly reduced class sizes, even though that meant many children could spend only part
of the week with their teachers. They reset timetables 65 (prevent) crowding at school gate and in
dinner halls. They required and encouraged masks.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
阅读下列短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Times were hard in the United States during the 1930s. My family could hardly make a living on
our farm. Even so, I was determined to help my parents celebrate their anniversary in a special way.
Three days before their anniversary, Mother took out her old dresses. They were wrinkled. Sighing,
Mother said, “Men’s clothes don’t change that much, but my dresses are just not in style.” I didn’t want
Mother to give up the anniversary celebration. Daddy would be disappointed. Also, I knew now what I
was going to do for them and they would have to be away for me to do it. I persuaded Mother to change
her dress, and by Friday night, she had finished the dress and pressed it.
On Saturday, Daddy went to borrow Mr. Smith’s pickup truck, and Mother went to get dressed. By
that time I could hardly wait for them to leave so I could start making the cake! Keeping my plan secret
had been hard, but I’d decided not to tell my younger brothers, Bill and David, until Mother and Daddy
were gone. I was afraid they would get excited and let it slip out.
Bill, David and I went out to wave good-bye until the truck was far down the road. We started back
to the house. “I have a wonderful surprise,” I told them. “While Mother and Daddy are out, we are going
to make a cake for them. An anniversary cake.”
Bill looked at me skeptically.
“A fancy three-layer cake and we’re going to decorate it.”
“We’ve never made a cake before,” Bill said. “We’re probably going to make a mess and Mother
will be upset.”
I told them I was the oldest and I was in charge. I got the milk and four eggs and the sugar. The
hardest part would be breaking the eggs on the edge of the bowl. I sifted(筛) the flour and baking
powder together first. And salt. I particularly remembered that because it seemed strange to put salt in a
cake. I put all ingredients together and mixed them. It looked creamy and delicious.
