Connections:

• Two cover plates, 12mm and 20 mm are to be connected by doubly cover butt joint
using 10mm cover plates. Find the strength of the joint if M16 bolts of grade 4.6 and fe
415 plates are used.
• Design a suitable angle section to carry a factored tensile force of 500 kN assuming a
single row of M20 bolts. The yield strength and ultimate strength of the material is 250
MPa and 410 Mpa respectively. Take the length of the member be 2.5 m.
• Determine the shear strength of 20 mm 8.8 grade bolt when connecting as rolled steel
plates in friction type connections
• The plates of 8 mm thick are connected by a single bolted lap joint with 20 mm dia bolts
@ 60 mm pitch. Calculate the efficiency of the joints. Consider 410Mpa for plates and
4.6 grade bolts.
• Two plates 180 mm wide 10 mm thick are to be connected by welding using shop welds.
Design the connection.
• A member of a truss consists of 2 angles 75x75x6 placed back to back which carries a
ultimate tensile load of 200 kN and is connected to a gusseted plate of 10 mm thick
placed between 2 connected legs. Determine the no. of 16 mm dia, 4.6 grade HSFG bolts
required for the joint.
