Ones harsh Wish

“To die: - to sleep: No more; and, by a sleep to say we end The heart-ache and the thousand

natural shocks That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wished” (1.ii.164)

Shakespear writes and has this obsession with death, suicide and constant question of death.

When we were going over this line and speaking about Hamlet questioning his life it brought me

to what I'm dealing with right now...I know its bad because in my head i really said “ Same

Hamlet same” .We see him go through obstacles with his fathers death and his mothers vast

decision to marry King Clauious very soon after her husband's death. Hamlet goes into this

depression and hard stage in his life .

Let me bring up Kate spade for a moment step away from Hamlet. . Kate Spade owned one of

the top handbag companies where their value is 2.4 billion dollars and her net worth around 200

million dollars. This is where the term “money can't buy happiness “ comes in on June 5,2018 at

55 years old she took her own life. She was struggling with anxiety and depression for years. It

didn't matter how rich she was, nothing made her happy, not even her husband.

I struggle with anxiety and depression , as well as my mom and two older sisters. It's said to be

a genetic passing in our genes. “Research at the time focused on the role that chemicals in the

brain play in depression and anxiety. These researchers hypothesized that insufficient levels of
neurotransmitters can lead to symptoms such as: feelings of sadness, helplessness, worthlessness,

or emptiness. overeating or a loss of appetite.” if you're wondering, the three neurotransmitters

are dopamine, serotonin and Norepinephrine, the three that control our moods so they are

balanced <--This is what I believe in. Freud believes in “Later, Freud modified his theory

stating that the tendency to internalize loss objects is normal, and that depression is simply due

to an excessively severe superego. Thus, the depressive phase occurs when the individual's

super-ego or conscience is dominant''. I think he's wrong because if we go back to Hamlet we see

his depression has nothing to do with his ego it simply has to do with the loss of his father and

his mothers new relationship who is his fathers brother. Again if we go back to Kate Spade a

multimillionaire with probably a big ego , if you think you're the best why would you lower

yourself and just end up killing yourself. To me , it has to be something inside of you that's being

generated incorrectly because wanting to end your life because of your “ego” makes no sense or

else I'm just interpreting Freud wrong. No one wants to die for no reason but depression really

tests to see how strong one is mentally.

Now let's look into Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. There are 5 you can see in the picture below.

The main one I am mainly focused on is Love and belonging. As we know his mother married

the man that killed her husband who was Hamlet's father. So not only did Hamlet lose his father

he lost his mother too. His mother states “ do not forever with thy vali lids, seek for thy noble

father in the dust thou known't common; all that lives must die” (1.ii.72). She explains to him

that death is normal but it seems she has no morse for her dead husband. Then this can lead into

Safety needs. He doesn't feel as if no one is there for him after a tragedy all he has is himself

which makes this world feel lonely which can lead into depression . So that's where his Esteem

lowers as well that strength to do anything and the want to live lowers. Personally, from
depression I lose my appetite. The physiological needs I need in my life are just not my priority

and I get too lazy so can Hamlet. Wanted to save Self - Actualization for last. DESIRE TO

BECOME THE MOST THAT ONE CAN BE in Hamlet's case its death! The want and thought

that' also at the tip of his brain. That desire to be dead because everything surrounding him , what

he's dealing with is harsh/cruel.

Shakespeare's writing is very confusing but yet very fascinating . It has so many interpretations you can

take from his sentences and it doesn't just say the meaning you have to think about it , then interpret it

then figure out who is involved with the book it's about putting two and two together. Yes, writing is not

the clearest to me , but the one thing that is are the constant ideas of death. Sadly i understand but it gave

me an advantage while reading. I was able to put myself in Hamlet's shoes and understand what he was

feeling and why. Also I got to research more theories on depression that i didn't include in my writing . I

am glad I expanded past the book with this project and have a better understanding with my own situation

why certain things happen. I even learned what my anti-depressant contains, the side effects.
