FINAL EXAMINATION

Name: RIONA MARIE D. MAGBUTAY Date: MAY 13, 2021 Score: _______________

Instructions: Answer concisely the following questions.

1. As a teacher with the knowledge in guidance and counseling what are the 5 most important ethical standards that
you think should be upheld? Defend your answer. (50 pts)

ANSWER:

First of all, School Guidance Counselors are given special responsibilities over other vulnerable human beings. People do
change, there are some who can’t or won’t change but have taken a path of their own choosing. Not everyone “gets it.”
Guidelines are written as reminders for the School Counselors to remember their oath in spite of temptations that might
arise as a result of designation as counselors. The rules are there as a reminder of the special responsibility a school
counselor has to carry out the duties of the office in an honorable fashion.

However, there are certain ethical standards that a teacher counselor should upheld and based on what I’ve learned in this
subject, those are the following;

1. TOUCHING - It’s so hard not to hug a student who is hurting. Especially if they are not a stranger to you or is the same
gender as you. But as a guidance counselor designate or a teacher, no matter what your sexual disposition is, you may not
touch a student other than a handshake. It could get both of you in all kinds of trouble. Plus, if you do touch a person while
they are expressing hurt of anger, when you touch them you can interrupt their emotional release.

2. CONFIDENTIALITY - There is a fine line of when to report a student to a higher authority. Generally, it is when they are a
threat to themselves or someone else. Or if they have confessed a crime of hurting, abusing or killing someone, or have
guns in house and are unstable. If there is no abuse, it is the teachers’ obligation to not disclose any of the student’s
personal information, including fees and payments for the visits to anyone. However, if the student is a minor, there is a
guideline to determine how much information should be disclosed to the parents.

3. AUTONOMY – It addresses respect for independence, and self-determination. As a teacher or teacher counselor it
allowing a student the freedom of choice and action it is the responsibility of the teacher or teacher counselor to encourage
students, when appropriate, to make their own decisions and to act on their own values. There are two important
considerations in encouraging students to be autonomous. First, helping them to understand how their decisions and their
values may be received within the context of the society in which they live, and how they may impinge on the rights of
others. The second consideration is related to the student’s ability to make sound and rational decisions. Student’s not
capable of making competent choices, such as minors and some with mental disabilities, should not be allowed to act on
decisions that could harm themselves or others.
4. Respect Differences in Cultural Values and Traditions - An increasingly diverse population equals an increasingly diverse
student population. School counselors need to be aware of their own cultural biases and values to avoid imposing them on
their students. They should develop an understanding of how social and economic inequalities as well as gender, cultural
and racial biases impact students and their families.

5. Provide Equal Access to Opportunities and Support – As a teacher promoting or handling guidance counseling, he/she
should ensure that each student in their charge has equal access to the counseling services they need. Some students will
require greater attention, but counselors should not use the needs of others or their personal preferences for certain
students to prevent them from serving all students at their level of need.

Lastly, the main principle of counseling is like any other profession; Do No Harm - As a professional teacher we are dealing
with fragile individuals who need help for their issues therefore the main objective is to listen, be empathic, genuine, honest
and trustworthy.

2. Cite at least 5 roles of the guidance counselor and at least 10 traits/characteristics of an effective counselor. What
have you discovered about yourself that can be of great use in applying guidance and counseling in your job as a
teacher? (50 pts)

ANSWER:

10 TRAITS/CHRATERICTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE COUNSELOR

In no particular order an effective counselor is;

1. A boundless interest in people —what they do and why they do it;

2. An interest/ability in biology, chemistry, physics, math; and the sciences—particularly the human sciences—
sociology, anthropology;
3. Patience and understanding for uncertainty;
4. An ability/interest in research and asking “why”?
5. Being open minded;
6. Empathy and compassion for those struggling in life;
7. An ability to listen and communicate;
8. A willingness to be a lifelong learner;
9. A willingness and ability to guide, teach, support, and coach; and
10. A belief that change is possible.
To answer the last question, what I have discovered about myself that can be of great use in applying guidance and
counseling in my job as a teacher is that, I have learnt that being a teacher we should have traits like patience,
persistence and management of handling students.

Teaching may not be my passion, but it gives me enjoyment, it gives me knowledge of learning new methods of
teaching every day. Teaching is considered as the noble job, it is the most honorable job where you will get
opportunity to work on difficult sides of the students. After parents, it’s our role as teachers to mold, nourish and
create better person for future goals of our students. I don't like to chide my students, I am very much jovial with
them, I try to understand their difficult path and try to work on them. Moreover, teaching helps to build self-
confidence, interaction skills and innovation. Teaching also gives me pleasure, it’s like exert oxygen in the air. It is
the most awful thing as a teacher when you are not so much expert to deal with student's according to their
psychology. I myself is still trying to develop my skills to understand their psychology. Teaching needs enormous
knowledge which day by day we have to make ourself experienced and be updated. I have also discovered that
teaching makes you smart and voracious reader.

Lastly, I know I am a neophyte in the teaching industry and still have a lot of things to discover about myself
however I can really say that we teachers can be excellent counselors but the only and biggest drawback for
teachers trying to fill that role is simply time! Public School Teachers are hired to teach a subject or two or even
more than that, but they can be a great help identifying students who need help and I always try to create and
develop myself to be the better teacher for our future generation.

3. Discuss a least 5 impediments in establishing a guidance program that you observe in your institution. How can you
address these impediments? (50 pts)

ANSWER:

There are various challenges to implementation of guidance and counselling programme in my institution

including inadequate facilities, lack of cooperation from students and lack of cooperation from parents
since most of them didn’t even finish elementary education.

Teacher counselors or even regular teacher has difficulties and challenges like, lack of awareness
of counselling among people, inadequate pay, job insecurity, absence of a professional body to
regulate counselling, lack of network of counsellors and mental health professionals for seeking.

Types of problems covered by Guidance

 Human emotions play a significant part in the lives of all people. ...
 Social Adjustment. Problems of personal nature are usual occurrences in various
developmental stages. ...
 Educational problems. ...
 Health.

Moreover, based on what I have just learned and based on the things that I am noticing, here some
few things that can be done to ensure the effectiveness of a guidance program.
 The most important predictor of successful counselling is that the patient’s mind is open to change
in how they see their problems and find ways to overcome them… that is… the patient wants to
make the necessary changes. The next predictor is a positive therapeutic rapport between the
counsellor and the patient.
 LISTENING- With empathy, curiosity, and compassion, this leads to everything else. It’s the power
of leading with a question that unlocks the mysteries of the soul and opens the veil of
understanding on a richer, human level, creating infinite possibilities for change and growth.
 Be truthful, both for the counselor and the counseled. Especially for the counselled. Why, because
the counselor may make a mistake as regard the counsel and advice if the person requesting for
counseling will not tell all.
 The student’s willingness to grow and change. Their level of insight. Their desire to challenge their
negative thoughts
 Lastly making my institution a SAFE ENVIRONMENT by having embracing the following;

 Set a time limit

 Active listening
 Be here and now
 Non-defensive
 Let patient discover their own truths
 Be open and honest
 Make student right not wrong
 Confidentiality
 Acknowledge progress
