Understanding Clients

Counselling is often confused with giving advice, however, it is not the same.
Counselling is a goal-based process that takes place between a counsellor and a client. It involves
exploring the difficulties including emotional and stressful situations that a client faces in their
lives.
It is important for counselors to know, firstly, their values as real grounded, sincere, loyal
before applied as value not opinion to a client. Understanding comes with knowing. They deal
with many cultures, personalities, mental stabilities. There is no room for error in values in the
healing of mind heart and soul of the troubled client. Control issues also may originate from
various sources, events, memories. It might start because of anxiety, traumatic events, fear of
failure, fear of abandonment, attachment issues, vulnerability, trust issues and so on. Some of the
control issues examples may be compulsive eating, exercising, and substance abuse. So the
counseling should, in one way, be able to make the client self-aware and introspect as to how and
why they behave that way. The other thing that the therapy should work is on maintaining these
behaviors and eventually get over these constant desires to control. Cognitive behavioral therapy
is effective for this issue. Medication can be recommended if the case needs extra attention.
Lastly, counselors must have the highest integrity to be in their profession. Because in
order to be nonjudgmental towards others values and culture you need to understand your own.
We have to accept and work from a stance of seeing values and cultures through the lens of those
we serve not our own. Remember that we don’t tell someone what to do but we help them see
options that are acceptable to them within their culture and world view.
