MODELLING OF EXTERNAL FLOW

Introduction

This simple tutorial is intended to crystallize and consolidate the knowledge of CFD you have
acquired from the intensive one-week block and to begin the application of that knowledge to
problems of practical engineering interest. The tutorial indicates the basic steps in using
ANSYS CFX for an external CFD analysis. Analysis the box van at the speed of 60mph in air at
20oC using the standard methodology on external flow analysis.

The aim is to carry out a CFD analysis and compare the aerodynamic forces on the box van
bodies at a speed of 60mph (26.82 m/s) in air at 20 oC and to identify areas of flow separation
and recirculation. As an additional important exercise you are asked to spend some time
investigating the effects of improving the quality of the boundary layer modeling on your results.

Although the flow in the wake behind the cars will be unsteady, the flow will be modeled as
steady in this introductory exercise. The five standard stages in a CFD analysis using ANSYS
Workbench are as follows:
 Geometry
 Mesh
 Setup
 Solution
 Results

In following these standard stages will help for prepare and analysis model in workbench:

 Configure a solidworks model For CFD Analysis

 Determine Frontal projection area using solidworks
 Import model in ANSYS
 Generate mesh
 Setting up the simulation
 Running the simulation
 Post processing
