1. What is the importance of mineralogy in geography?

- Mineralogy plays an important role in geography because it gives idea of how Earth was formed. It is also
beneficial for learning about Earth’s materials, stricture, and systems. Includes in the mineralogy is the
studying of where do minerals can be found. With that, it is important in geography because it will point out the
places where particular minerals are abundant. Knowing this will surely bring development to such places and
will provide sources to those who need different types of minerals. The discovery of new minerals could
provide useful materials for industry. The study of the chemical properties of minerals could lead to the
discovery of new uses for Earth's mineral resources. Mining ores for their mineral components provides the
materials for lasers, buildings, and jewelry.
2. Explain your side about the advantages and disadvantages of quarries.
- Quarrying is one of the activities that affects the environment as well as the people in a positive and negative
way. One of the advantages of quarrying is that it gives income and work. Some of the people are working on a
quarrying site and this work makes their family live. It has really a positive impact on the economic and
business sector of the country as well as in the building of infrastructures beneficial to everyone. On the other
hand, it brings bad effects to the way of living of the community near to the site as well as to the environment
as a whole. It brings pollution to the air, water and soil. The quarrying may bring dust to nearby people and
thus, can cause respiratory diseases. Improper waste disposal in different quarrying sites is also very evident
and the wastes could be given off to the rivers and other bodies of water. This may also lead to destruction of
the quarrying site itself. For me, it is really hard for us to stop quarrying because of the great help it brings to
the people and to different sectors most especially in the building houses and infrastructure. We can’t stop it
but we can lessen it. As stewards of the nature, we should do some actions so it will be lessened for our
environment to be healthy and still, safe.
3. What is the reason of constant flooding in the town and city of Calapan and Naujan, Oriental
Mindoro? Can we blame anyone for it or it is just a normal phenomenon in our place? What can you
contribute to lessen it?
- As I asked my friends living near the area affected by the flooding, the rivers near them are connected on the
mountains. As it rains that hard, the water flows down and the river overflows easily. This is because the
mountains do not have enough trees to control rainwater. People do illegal loggings and kaingin which result to
constant flooding. This also makes the water brown and not clear. Also, there is mining in the mountains before
which also contribute to this. The mining and illegal logging mixed with continuous rain makes the river
overflows which results to flooding in the lowlands. There are also destroyed dikes in Arangin caused by the
large force of the flowing water. It also contributes to flooding in Naujan West. These are not just normal
phenomenon. This can be blame to people who do illegal loggings, kaingin, and mining on the mountains
because those are the reason why the river gets full and bring flood to lowlands. There should also be
rechanneling of the water to correct its flow so it will not go into houses. It should be given much more attention
because many houses and people are affected. As a youth, I can spread awareness through the power of
social media to be aware of floods most especially if your place is vulnerable to it. Social media is very
powerful because it can reach hundreds and thousands of people. I can make infographics and other tools to
disseminate information on how they can cope to flooding. I will also include hotline and cellphone numbers
they can call in case of emergency. If there is a call for donations to the affected people, I will help and give
some to the people who needs it. I will also include some do’s and don’ts during flood is in their area.
