SCENARIO 1
Objective: Scenario 1 is going to be used as an introduction to the cockpit, including instrument panel
layout, systems and then will conclude with the start of the engine.
1. The student(s) will sit down and be introduced to the Seat Mechanisms.
a. Forward and back system emphasizing the locking mechanism
b. Up and down system emphasizing the proper height for good visibility over the panel
c. Feet positioning for proper rudder/ brake movement
2. The student will fasten their Seat Belts
a. Lap belts – When to have it on as a pilot or passenger
b. Types of seat belts – 2,3,4 and 5 points systems
c. Shoulder Harness – When and how to use it
3. The student(s) will now be introduced to the Rudder System
a. Forward and back movement on the pedal for steering (2.5° to 30°) and yaw
b. Toes on brakes with differential pressure for braking
c. Types of brake systems - Hydraulic, pneumatic, manual
d. Parking Brake – When and how to use it – cable versus own master cylinder
e. Brake operations - Hydraulic pressure, master cylinder, brake cylinder, piston, brake discs and
brake liners
4. The Checklist
a. Introduction and overview
b. Why do we use a checklist – Memory aid, routine, and flow
c. When do we use it – Start-up, taxi, pre-take off, take off, cruise, climb, descent, pre and post
landing, emergencies
d. How do we use the checklist – Challenge and response

For Scenario 1, the instructor will perform the cabin inspection 2-2 checklist portion referenced from
AL250 Checklist Flight Manual – Single Engine Piston

5. Use the checklist, student will proceed to 2-3 “Start-up Procedure”, start at Electrical System
a. Battery ON – Check volt reading
b. Introduction of voltmeter (12v vs 24v), alt meter (-60 to +60 amps), load meter (0-60 amps),
c. Alternator ON – Check for needle movement
d. The Electric System – Battery, alternator, solenoid, voltage regulator, bus and circuit breakers

6. Continuing with the checklist, Fuel System
a. Fuel tank CHECK – Read Fuel Quantity (Gal)
b. Introduction of the fuel system – Fuel tanks, fuel pumps, fuel switches, fuel gauges
c. Fuel issues – Quantity, weight, and contamination
7. Continuing with the checklist, Engine Control
a. Throttle FORWARD - Introduction of throttle control – Tachometer, air intake
b. Mixture FORWARD – Introduction of mixture control – Fuel flow, EGT, carburetor VS fuel injection
c. Carburetor Heat OFF – Introduction of carburetor heat control – Carb ice (20-70 Deg), RPM drop,
carburetor VS fuel injection
d. Fuel Pump ON – Gravity VS pump feeding system, vapor lock, flooding, and hot start
8. Continuing with checklist, Start-up Safety
a. Strobe Light ON - Anti-collision systems, strobes, rotating beacon, nav lights, day VS night (pilot
night vision)
b. Outside safety CLEARED PROP - Environmental awareness, ramp safety, noise, fuel truck, line
personnel
c. Starter ENGAGE – Time of engagement and waiting time between engagement depending on
engine type

This concludes Scenario 1.

Shut down Engine with mixture Control and switch PIC after a 5 minutes break with questions.
