MEISTER ECKHART (1260-1327/28?), whose original name was Johannes Eckhart, was a
Dominican theologian, philosopher and writer who became one of the greatest
medieval European mystics and whose writings helped build the foundation of the
Western mystical tradition. In the language of the Christian tradition Eckhart
expounded the eternal mysteries in a style that was fresh and original in the best
sense, charting the course of union between the individual soul and God.
The depth and universality of Eckhart's teaching has drawn seekers of truth
Christian and non-Christian alike. His personal path from conventional friar to
professor to lay preacher culminated in a spiritual philosophy that combined the
teachings of an array of pagan and Christian writers, as well as Muslim and Jewish
philosophers. His revolutionary decision to take his approach to the common people
garnered him many enthusiastic followers as well as powerful enemies. His radical
and penetrating insight makes him a natural point of reference for a genuinely
ecumenical understanding.
Eckhart preached a personal, internal path to God at a time when the Church could
not have been more hierarchical and ritualistic. Then and now, Eckhart’s
revolutionary method of direct access to ultimate reality offers a profoundly
subjective approach that is at once intuitive and pragmatic, philosophical yet non-
rational, and, above all, universally accessible.
Despite his distinction and popularity, indeed partly because of it, in the
political and ecclesiastical turbulence of the fourteenth century, the Meister was
accused of heresy, brought before the local Franciscan-led Inquisition, and tried
as a heretic by Pope John XXII. He seems to have died before a verdict was
received. Following his death and papal censure, supporters quietly kept his
legacy alive through the centuries, albeit underground until the master’s dramatic
rediscovery by modern Protestants and Catholics.
