1 SALES DECREASE

With transmission rates higher in crowded spaces, a busy bus or crammed

subway carriage seems a likely breeding ground for the virus to spread. It’s
therefore unsurprising that worldwide public transport use has rapidly declined.
Many bus companies in Malaysia faced an unexpected economic tragedy due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. As the statement by Minister of Defence of Malaysia,
Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob at his daily press conference during Movement
Control Order (MCO) saying that the number of passengers is limited to half of
the total actual capacity in order to ensuring that social distancing and personal
hygiene were met. SPT Express company who provide the actual capacity 40
seaters and to abide by the government's guidelines the bus company only allow
20 people to board the bus at a time. By the means of the launched of this
guidelines given by government it surely gives a big impact towards to the sales
as the sales also will cut to the half.

SPT Express were known as their bus ticket sold out fast as many people
that work at Kuala Lumpur also the university students that study in Kuala
Lumpur want to visit their village at Sabak Bernam or Teluk Intan same goes with
people who want to try their luck to work at the Kuala Lumpur and the university
student who have to return to their university after have finished their semester
break.

As SPT Express is the bus company that travel between Kuala Lumpur to
Sabak Bernam and to Teluk Intan in Perak, before the launch of this guidelines,
SPT Express also cease their operating during Movement Control Order (MCO)
when government announced that the cross-border is not allowed. They
temporarily suspend their services during the MCO period, as demand has
dropped sharply on express bus services

During this restriction of cross-border, many people stop using SPT

Express as they need to stuck at where they were that time and the company
have to stop the operation as there were nobody buy the tickets. This cause SPT
Express company sales fell sharply during the start of Movement Control Order
until now. Even in spite of the fact that during Conditional Movement Control
Order that launch around June 2020 due to the positive cases of Covid-19
indicates a decrease and the announcement makes by the Minister of Defence of
Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob state that the bus company have the
ability to run at the full capacity also the announcement that people have the
ability to cross-border, the company of SPT Express don’t show any increase in
their sales.

This situation happens due to the fact of people in Malaysia afraid to ride
public transport as there have been claims that the use of public transport has
also led to the spread of COVID-19 and people more prefer to ride their own car
to their destinations. The sales ticket person at Sabak Bernam also state that to
fill up the 40 capacity in the bus very difficult as there were less people want to
go to the Kuala Lumpur.

2.2 LOSS INCOME

On 24 March 2020, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong

announced that the daily operational hours for the purpose of public transport are
from 6am to 10am and 5pm to 10pm nationwide, effective from March 25 and for
the entire duration of the movement control order (MCO). Due to the limited daily
operational, company of SPT Express faced the loss in their income as they
cannot run their business as usual likes tourist sector, air transportation and
other sector.

SPT Express company also need to pay bus driver and other employers
salary even in spite of the fact that when they need temporarily stop their
operation as the government didn’t allow the company to cut down employer
salary. Around Jun 2020, when government already allows to bus having full
capacity, company also need to prepare a lot as to prepare face masks for those
who don’t wear the face masks, provide hand sanitizer and have to sanitize the
whole bus after finished one trip.

All these things need to add in the high operating costs of company and
eventually it effects the income as there will be more things that need to
prepared. In a month, SPT Express barely having sales as their sales keep on
dropping and the company need to bear a large amount of burden such as bus
financing, and paying staff salaries and other already beyond the company sales,
the income in SPT Express keep on losing as the company didn’t earn a point of
return on capital.
