DR MUHAMMAD RIZWAN MEMON

F.C.P.S
Assistant Professor
Undercuts
Ø An area which is out of con tact with a ny vertical
dropped from a g iven ho rizo ntal (GPT 8-2005 )
l A partially edentulous mouth has
many undercut areas which result
from:

l Naturally bulbous shape of the teeth

l Inclined long axes of teeth
l Inclined soft tissue and underlying
bone

l Rigid denture base/rigid parts of

clasps will not pass in to
undercuts
Surveying

An analysis and comparison of the

prominence of intraoral contours
associated with the fabrication of a dental
prosthesis (GPT 8-2005)
Surveyor
A paralleling instrument used in
construction of a dental prosthesis to
locate and delineate the contours and
relative positions of abutment teeth and
associated structures (GPT 8-2005)
PARTS OFA SURVEYOR

l Base
l Table
l Vertical arm
l Horizontal arm
l Screw locking pin
l Surveying arm
l Mandrel/ chuck
l Paralleling tool/ guideline marker

l It consist of:-
l Trimming knife
l Graphite marker
l Undercut gauge
l Analyzing rod
Analyzing Rod

Metal rod is placed

against the teeth and
ridge during the initial
analysis of the cast.
Graphite Marker

Graphite marker is
moved around the tooth
& alveolar ridge to
identify & mark the
position of the max.
convexity.
Undercut gauge

Gauges are provided to

measure the extent of
horizontal undercut

Available in following:
0.25 mm,
0.50 mm &
0.75 mm
Vertical trimming knife

The area is overfilled

with hard wax & this may
be trimmed.

Cast
1. Enables undercuts to be accurately
blocked out.
1. Failure to insert the denture (black bar)
Failure to No interference
insertion with insertion
2. Marks the most bulbous part of the tooth.
3. Demonstrate undercut areas which can
be used for the retention of the denture.
5. Enables those parts of the denture base
which fit against the crowns of the teeth
to be placed above the survey line.
5. Permits the dentist and technician to
design a denture with one path of
insertion.
Rotational Path of Insertion
6. Surveyor can be used to locate exi s ti n g
or p o ten ti al g u i d i n g su r f ac es so that
they will as si s t or can be al ter ed to
as s i s t in providing unimpeded passage
of prosthesis along established path of
insertion.
