Life Science

Topic: Physical and Behavioral Traits of Living Things This topic focuses on
observing, exploring, describing and comparing living things in Ohio.
K.LS.1: Living things have specific characteristics and traits.

Family Night:

For family night, the students will be demonstrating the results and how living things grow over
time to their parents.

Background information:

The students will have been working on planting a classroom garden as well as taking care of a
classroom mini aquarium. The students have been taking turns watering the plants everyday as
well as feeding the fish in the aquarium. The students will have been recording their observations
as each living thing grows. The teacher will take pictures of the progress and display them on
trifold boards for parents and students to see the progression and growth of the plants and fish.

Activity:
1. Parents will come in and walk around the classroom where exhibit is held.
2. Students will guide parents and both will observe the garden, aquarium, and trifold
board “timeline” of pictures.
3. Parents and students will then sit down as a “taste test” is held of the different foods
that are grown in the garden.
4. Teacher will show the timeline pictures of each plant and explain each plant
individually.
5. Students and parents will then that plant.
6. This will continue until every food is tasted.

Relation to museum:

The museum that will be visited is a nature museum. There, the students will be learning all
about the difference between living and nonliving things. It is hard to understand the concept that
living things have the capability to change over time. Therefore, by doing this activity, the
students will be able to see this change that they would not be able to see on a one day trip.

Try it at home!
Herb gardens are relatively easy to grow and can be
grown inside with little space! Stapled to this sheet
are basal seeds, but other herbs like sage, and
rosemary can be purchased at places like Walmart
for a cheap price. Just plant them in small pots and
place them near a window seal. Before you know it-
you can be cooking with home grown herbs!

I would suggest keeping a journal for your child to

write/draw what they observe as the plant grows.
