With the following information we would like to provide
you with our recommendation regarding a safe engine
operation and the Oil Mist Detection system. Concerns
MAN Diesel & Turbo four-stroke engines in
General facts marine applications:
L32/40, V32/40, L32/40CD, V32/40CD,
L32/44CR, V32/44CR, L40/54B,
Traditionally the OMD has been one of the safety features
L48/60, V48/60, L48/60B, V48/60B,
for protection of medium speed Diesel engines over the
L48/60CR, V48/60CR, L51/60DF, V51/60DF,
last decades. Moreover this system has been an L58/64, L58/64CD
essential equipment for classification societies and
important to customers for many years. Filing Advice

The increasing availability of other safety systems related
to engine operation has led to a loss of status of the
OMD system. Therefore it was no longer defined as
mandatory by classification society. Consequently not all
modern marine diesel engines are equipped with this
system, despite the obvious advantages and reliability
the OMD has.

As we are convinced of the benefits the device offers it is

still serial standard in all our new-build four-stroke
engines and is nowadays installed in combination with
our splash oil monitoring system.

The reasons are still simple: The OMD detects any irregular heat source in the engine that gets in contact
with engine lube oil. Physically oil spray will cause oil mist within the engine while encountering or passing by
irregular high temperature surfaces.

The OMD continuously monitors the whole engine crankcase for such oil mist and will react as soon as limit
values are exceeded.

Important facts

The OMD has a long history of protecting engines from serious damages, such as:

• Crankcase explosions, caused by overheating due to component seizures within the engine.
• Serious subsequential damages, caused by continuous engine operation with “undetected” failures of
engine components.

The OMD therefore actively contributes to avoid dangerous situations to human health as well as high
financial losses resulting from high repair costs and long downtimes of the engine.

Based on the above, we recommend verifying whether your engines are equipped with an OMD system.
