B.Tech. programme in Aerospace Engineering is aimed at imparting sound knowledge in the fundamental areas of the
discipline and also expose students to advanced applications of this knowledge. The students will get the specialized training
in the design and development of launch vehicles, aircraft and space craft. Aerospace Engineering deals with unlike most
traditional ground based systems, optimality and reliability are of paramount importance in such systems. This necessitates
accurate theoretical and experimental analyses of a variety of phenomena, and performance predictions of a variety of
complex systems. Aerospace Engineering is the discipline which is closest to what is popularly known as Rocket Science.

Admission Process

Candidates who are desirous to join B.Tech. Programmes in IIST must appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main)
conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi to qualify themselves to appear for Joint Entrance
Examination (Advanced) conducted by IITs and secure the minimum prescribed category-wise marks in JEE (Advanced)

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must make sure that they satisfy the criteria given below for applying for admission to Undergraduate
Programmes in IIST.

Citizenship

Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for admission in IIST.

Date of Birth

Candidates belonging to General category (GEN) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories must have been born on or
after October 1, 1994. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Persons with Disabilities
(PD) categories must have born on or after October 1, 1989.

The date of birth as recorded in the high school/first Board /or its equivalent will be accepted. If the certificate does not
mention the date of birth, candidate must submit an authenticated document from competent authority indicating the date
of birth at the time of Counselling.

Qualifying Examination (10+2 or Equivalent)

Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. The aggregate marks for
SC, ST and PD candidates should be at least 65%. The marks scored in the following five subjects will be considered for
calculating the aggregate marks criterion.

Mathematics

A language (if the candidate has taken more than one language, then the language with the higher marks will be considered)

Any subject other than the above four (the subject with the highest marks will be considered)

The qualifying examination should be any of the following:

The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE), New Delhi, etc., recognized
by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/University.

Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

Vocational Higher Secondary Examination.

Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five
subjects.

Any Public School/Board/University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2
system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London / Cambridge /Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.

High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International
Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public
(Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

Marks scored in JEE(Advanced) Examination

Candidates who are desirous to join B.Tech. Programmes in IIST must appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main)-
2019 conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi to qualify themselves to appear for Joint
Entrance Examination (Advanced)-2019 conducted by IITs and secure the minimum prescribed category-wise marks in JEE
(Advanced)-2019 as given below

General Candidates (GEN): At least 20% marks in aggregate and at least 5% marks in each of the three subjects (Physics,
Chemistry and Mathematics).

Other Backward Community – Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) Candidates: At least 18% marks in aggregate and at least 4.5%
marks in each of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics)

Scheduled Caste(SC), Scheduled Tribe(ST) & Persons with Disabilities(PD) Candidates: At least 10% marks in aggregate and at
least 2.5% marks in each of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).

About College:

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram was established in the year 2007 by Dr. G.
Madhavan Nair. IIST Thiruvananthapuram got the status of a deemed to be University under the UGC Act, 1956. The college is
approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The institute lies
over an area of 100 acres. The institute is currently offering undergraduate programmes to about 560 students, postgraduate
programmes to 160 students and doctoral programmes to more than 100 students. The college offers admissions to
undergraduate programmes on the basis of JEE Advanced scores, postgraduate programmes on the basis of GATE scores and
to doctoral programmes on the basis of scores in the written test and interview.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Thiruvananthapuram is located in Valiamala Road, Valiamala, Kerala. The
nearest airport from the Institute is the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is located 30 kms away and students
can reach the campus in approximately 36 mins. The nearest railway station from IIST Thiruvananthapuram is the
Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station which is 25 kms away. Students can book an auto and reach the campus in about
28 mins. Pathinaram Kallu Stop is the nearest Bus Stop from the institute which is 1.5 km away and students can reach the

Clubs, Committees & Societies:-

Mathematics Club- This Club has been formed to discuss any topic related to Mathematics. Lectures and discussions are
conducted by the Department of Mathematics to develop the knowledge of students in Maths.

FOSS Group- FOSS Group aims to promote Open Source Software tools related to Aerospace, Avionics and the physical
sciences for the research and development through conducting various workshops and lectures.

Aero Club- This Club consists of members who are interested in developing their knowledge in the field of aeronautics.
Students of this club engage themselves in activities to learn more about the functioning and making of flying models.
Various events are conducted to learn about the design and working pattern of flying models including Quad-copter
design, 3D Printer, RC Plane and Ornithopter, Two Stage Water Rocket.

Computer Club- The Computer Club IIST Thiruvananthapuram aims to develop the computer and software skills of
students. Various training sessions, lectures, and workshops on computer systems, software, programming, networking,
cybersecurity, and embedded systems.

Robotics Club- The main objective of the Robotics Club is to encourage students to learn more about robotics. Students
of the club conduct and participate in activities and workshops related to robotics, mechanical design etc. Students here
learn about the working pattern of robots so that they make their bot.

IEEE Students Chapter- IEEE Students Chapter consists of various branches namely IEEE Students Branch, IEEE Industrial
Applications Society (IAS) student chapter and IEEE Antennas and Wave Propagation Society student chapter which works
for the benefit of IIST students by conducting various programmes and events.

Astronomy Club- The Astronomy Club consists of members who are interested to know about the facts and skills related
to Astronomy. Students are encouraged to join this club to know more about astrology in detail. Night-sky sessions are
also conducted to teach and explore more about the facts of Astronomy.
IIST Quiz Club- IIST Quiz Club consists of members who are interested in developing their quiz skills. Members of this
club study and gather information on various topics including current affairs, general knowledge and social issues. The
members of this club also conduct and participate in different quiz events conducted inside the institute.

Photography Club- The Photography Club aims to develop the photography skills of students. Members of this club
practice new techniques and also learn about new software and applications related to photography to gain more
knowledge about photography.

Movie and Performing Arts Club- The Movie and Performing Arts Club of IIST Thiruvananthapuram comprises members
who are interested in acting and drama. This club encourages the students to develop their skills in acting. Members of
this club have also participated in different skits and plays in events and programmes conducted inside the institute.

Physics Club- This Club has been formed with the motive of providing more knowledge about physics to students.
Physica Lecture Series is also being conducted by this club for the students so that they can learn more about physics.
Lectures by well-trained lecturers are given to students which include discussions regarding various topics related to
physics.

Eco Club- The Eco Club has been formed to spread awareness about environmental issues among the students. The
programmes include plantation of trees, observance of earth hour, campus cleaning drives, disposal of non-
biodegradable waste, organic farming etc.
